We do not expect this issue to go over w ithout some oposition. and if this oposition shall be the means of in ceasing interest in the bond elec tion and getting cut the vote, so much the better. Mr. B. F. Swaggart essays to attack t!e bond issue in an article in this issue of The Gazette-Times to which we direct attention. Mr. Swaggart evidently has given the matter but little careful thought to date and it can be seen from the manner in which he presents his side of the case, that he is jumping at conclusion. How ever, we shall not attempt just now to make an answer to some of the statements contained in his article, being content to let it pass for what it is worth. s-s-s A Lesson for Advanced Civilization. Q LOWLY but surely the sleep- VJ mg giant or Asia, Uiina, is giving evidence of her awaken ing. General Feng Yu-hsiang makes the latest motion indicative of the changing condition. General Feng, Christian, and military commander, seems to have grasped the fundamentals of national strength or at least to have sensed some of the reasons for national weakness. He has abolished opium in his army; he has wiped out the use of intoxi cating liquor; he has cleaned up the territory of all the Pan-tzu, or public women; and now he has set his soldiers to useful work. All around the army camps commanded by General Feng are rows of factories in which the sol diers labor. General Feng works with them. This wise Chinese believes an army can be made pro ductive in time of peace just as it is made destructive in time of war. Moreover he sees that the peace work of an army is as important as its war work. One of these days the "advanc ed civilization" of Europe and of America may come to agree with the slant eyed gentlemen of the East. S-S-S Sow we have an cistern man who faints three times while be ing married. What will he do when he kisses good bye to his salary check. S-S-S ACCORDING to a report com ing from Washington, D. C, it is stated that in the last five year period over sixty-two thous and state and federal laws were enacted in the United States. Small wonder that the man who has to run a flivver, help in the spring house cleaning, and try to do a little planting under glass for his garden, is obliged to plead ig norance now and then because of a lack of time to become acquaint ed with them when he is hailed up by the authorities for the viola tion of some one of these sixty two thousand. A good law is only one for which a need is self evi dent and generally agreed on by all of the people. The enactment of laws with the hope that the peo ple will grow up to them is the poorest way out of a serious dif ficulty. S-S-S We are told that one half of the world is half crazy, but we are not advised whether the other half it entirely crazy or marching in step. S-S-S The Child's Spending Money. It will be interesting to watch if the principles of thrift, as impart ed by the elder Rockefeller to his son, and by the son to his children, among them his daughter Abbey, now Mrs. Milton, will extend to the third generation. If it does, the former Miss Rockefeller will not find the raising of a family any great financial burden. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., recent ly gave as tits recipe for the in culcation of saving: "When my children reached the i;e of seven I gave them an al lowance of 30 cents a week. They were to spend 10 cents out of this, they were to save ten cents, and they were to give ten cents to the church, I audited these accounts every week. These accounts were never over a dollar or two each week until the age of fifteen. Wealth hurts children when theyjment against the defendant. Sarah get too much of it. Just because a man can afford to hire people to wait on his children is no rea son whv he should. 1 don't " It cannot be said Mr Rockefel ler's sttitude towards his children has been that of a grasping man. because he and his father have given awav in the neighborhood of $500,000,000. In these davs of flappers and finale hoppers the average boy and girl would think themselves much abused if they were compelled to get along with thirty cents a week. It might not he a bad idea for many of our par ents of modest means to try the experiment. S-S-S WHILE there was some very serious damaee done at Lexington on Wednesday last by the high w ater that came down on the little city from Blackhorse canyon, there was no occasion for the exaggerated stories printed in the Portland dailies. Those peo ple seem to have a mania for giv ing this countv a "black eve" on every occasion of this kind, com ing out with scare heads and gross misstatement of facts. As a matter of fact, the rains of the past week have been worth thousands of dol lars to the Lexington country. while the county at large has re ceived a wetting that is beyond es timation in its benefits to the growing grain crops. It was un fortunate that Lexington had to be hit as she was, but the damage is not beyond repair, there was no loss of life and the material de struction can be borne and soon overcome, and the spirit of the good people of that community will not be greatly dampened by this misfortune. They would doubtless have been worse off had the drought continued and the crops failed. S-S-S Tom Driskell came over from La Grande on Tuesday and will remain in the city until after decoration day.
