Wave of Law Violation Breeding Defi
ance and Contempt of All Government
Wit.vhiriKton, Ort. 3 The address of
Attorney (jetu'ral 1'aunherty upon "Ke
s.rt for the Law" before the iiniiual
t orivfitlion of the American Bur Abso-
;.itiuii, taken in connection with cer
tain activities in the internal revenue
department and the prohibition en- :
fiitiement unit of that department, U
h-iieved to forecast an aKKressive cam-
piiiKn BKainat the lawless elements
u lii h ate preaching and practicing op-;
t-n violation of the Constitution and the,
ft-deral laws. i
The brazen defiance not only of the i
federal laws but of the Constitution ;
itM'lf, by those who are opposed to the
Klvhteenth amendment and by thoBe
who hope to profit financially by vio
lating the laws plus the encouragement
openly given this clasa by public men
and certain Influential newspapers have
:'rouFtd the authorities to a realization
that drastic action must the taken or
the country will be engulfed In a wave
'f outlawry.
A Question of Law aad Order
As Attorney General Daugherty
pointed out In his address In Cincin
nati before the American Bar Associa
tion, the time has passed for a discus
slnn nf the Eighteenth amendment It
is now an integral part of the American
f'onstltutlton and It must be enforced.
It la the duty . of every citizen to obey
it. It does not matter whether some
like It or not, for, as the Attorney Gen
eral said: "It Is the duty of the min
ority, as well as the majority, to obey
the law." And If those who do not like
a particular law or a constitutional
r rrendment are permitted to disregard
nnd disobey it, the aame permission j
must be granted those who do not like
?nme other law or constitutional provl
vinn. Once this is granted, there Is an
nd to orderly government
Ttepreaentattve and stable govern.
Mont permit and encourage the utmost
freedom of discussion of the wisdom of
riacting new laws, but no stable gov-
rnment can permit any debate as to
whether a law, once enacted, is to be
f nforced. To countenance open, Insol
ent, repeated and widespread defiance
of law and the authorities ts to admit
the government Is without sincerity,
r nurnee and strength, that orderly pro
revues hnve broken down and the con
stitutional guarantees of protection to
lifp and property are worthless.

Wrong Ideas
on Paint Economy
THERE'S one way to save
on paint. That way is to use
the best of paint.
Some think of paint economy
as "cost per gallon." That is
wrong. Cheap paint doesn't
cover as much surface you
need mart gallons.
Cheap paint is more difficult
to spread, requires more labor,
bo the best paint costs no more
when you've put it on the house
than cheap paint does.
More than that, it lasts five
or more years longer, if prop
erly applied, while cheap paint
on the average begins cracking
in twelve months. Good paint
is an investment that saves
money by preventing deteriora
tion of the house.
"Cheap" paint is the only
paint that really costs you any
thing. Fin i FR

un follow:
"The people of the United States have
undertaken to suppress the age-old evil
t.f the liquor trafnc. When for the
gratification of their appetites lawyers,
hankern, merchants and manufacturers
and social leaders, both men and women
scoff at tho law or any other law, they
are aiding the cause of anarchy and
promoting mob violence. They are sow
ing dragons teeth, and they need not be
Hurprised when they find that no judi
cial or police authority can sa'e our
country or humanity from reaping the
harvest."
Public sentiment is becoming awake
to a realization that the "rum runner'
who is being made a hero In the col
umns of some newspapers, is. In point
of fact, a smuggler who is trying to
evade the revenue laws and Is on all
fours with the criminal who endeavors
to smuggle jewelry, precious stones or
any other articles past the custom
house.
Why Have Any Caaatltutloaf
Within the shadow ot the capitol In
Washington there Is being maintained
