It Is utterly Impossible for one who

the winter.
In the city of Vienna tests conducted

food kitchens showed that D2 per cent
of the children between the axes of 6

Thirty-three per cent were mark

PLIGHT OF REFUGEE
CHILDREN TERRIBLE
One hundred thousand Russian refu

RICKETS DID THIS.
Before this five-year-old Vienna girl
was operated upon In the American
Convalescent Home her leg was even
more horribly deformed from rickets
aud she. was In constant instead of In

Is straight again, aad by degrees she Is

aftermath of under-nutrltlon, and It Is
to cut down the harrowing prevalence
of such disease as this among the chil

millions that face a winter of horror.

There are thousands of kinds of smiles, but It wauld be mighty bard to
picture even In the mind's eye smiles more poignantly tragic than thoae here
seen. Two years of life have held little save misery for these Vienna young
sters, yet, even though the result Is painful, they smile. They are victims of
rickets, the offspring of near-starvation, and that countless others In stricken
Europe may not have te share their fate eight American relief organizations,
under the name of the European Relief Council, are making a Joint appeal for
the conscience of America to complete relief work which this winter faces Its
crisis. These agencies are the American Relief Administration, the American
Red Cross, the American Friends' Service Committee (Quakers), the Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee, the Federal Council of Churches of Christ la
