PAGE SF.VEN County Agent's Prompt Work Prevents Motor-Oil Famine Alertness on the part of the cuuttly HKtmt in Umatilla county, Ureg., this year prevented a motor-oil famine which threatened many thousands 01 dollars In loss of crops. bats in the spring It waa found that due to an embargo there was little mo tor fuel on hand for trat-tors and trucks and that plowing could not be comple ted. Fanners used distillate, a lower Krade of gasoline, for tractors and for operating the combined headers ami threshers with which the grain erupt are harvested. Distillate waa found to be entirely out of the market. The county agent appealed to several Calif ornla oll-reltning companies, and, with the aid of the California Stale Market ing llureau, succeeded In having about 25 carloads of distillate shipped Into the region. The orders of farmers were poolea and banks were Instructed to honor demands on account of those in the pool. The first shipment of 12 carloads, or 100,661 gallons, was dlBtrlbutod among 111 farmers In May and saved them 19,060. During June two more cars and July eight more cars were distributed, making a total of 2S5,S5i gallons of fuel. It Is estimated that the entire savings totaled at least 115, 000. During the month of June sim ilar service was given farmers by coun ty agents In Morrow, Sherman, am: Wasco counties. In these three coun ties a total of 195,000 gallons of distil late were secured and distributed at a great saving. From Weekly News Let ter, U. 8. Department of Agriculture.
