We are even tulay taking about 26, 0U0, 000,000 cubic feet of material out of our forests every year and growing less than a fourth as much in their place. We are going so far as to use of the trees too small for the sawmill, but upon which our fu ture supply, of lumber depends, three and a half times as fast as they are being grown. Our timber wastage by prevent able fires alone is (28.000,000 a year. There were 27,000 recorded forest fires in 1919, burning a total of 8, 250,000 acres; during the prior year 25,000 forest fires burned 10,500.- 000 acres. This fftunendoim vsaUea ! Is but a part of the results of our prodigal negligence. The depletion of our resources has resulted less from (he use of the tim ber than from their devastattion. On 81,000,000 acres devastated by forest fires and methods of cutting which destroy or prevent new timber growth there Is only desolation. The The Forest Devastation. The destruction of American for ests through greed and carelessness forms a shameful chapter In our his tory. It Is still continuing at a rate that would be unbelievable were not the detailed facts thrust upon us. The only salvation for the future of the multiform wood-using Industries of the country must He In a broad, wIbo and persistent policy of refor estation. It Is a subject that comes espec ially close home to the press, because of its bearing upon the present news print famine, and because the press Is the natural guardian of all public interests. The original forests of the United States, according to Repartment of Agriculture estimates, covered 822,- 000,000 acres and contained 6,200,- 000,000,000 board feet of timber. Over two-thirds of this area has been culled, cut-over or burned, and FOR PRINTING THAT HAS REAL CLASS SEE THE G.-T. There are more than 60.000 wood-ming plantc in the United States, employing more than a million persons and having an invested capital of three billions of dollars, and all alike are Buffering the diminishing supply of material.
