The home merchant does not charge a higher price a much higher one than he did before the war. He is compelled to do so or go out of business. He is paying enormously high prices for all goods in the wholesale markets. He Is paying Increased freight rates and cartage. His help costs him more money and his overhead expenses are great er. Everywhere he turns he is forced to pay a heavy increase in the cost of conducting his business. Added to this, he is under an ad ditional pressure in paying the high cost of supporting his family and him self. All of this must come out of the business, and this can only be done by charging a reasonable percentage of profit over the wholesale cost of his goods. The home merchant can not afford to profiteer. Were he to do so he would soon be trapped and would thereafter be a dead one in this com munity. Prices are high abnormally high but we believe the home merchants are as reasonable In their charges as can be expected under existing con ditions. Let's be fair and consider both sides before we criticize. Every voter in Morrow -county should register for the coming elec tion, if not already registered. No more important election has occurred in many years. The registration books will be open only a few days more. During the few days remain ing, keep this matter in mind and do not fail to place your name on the list. Then study the questions the peope must settle at the election, and on election day go to the polls and vote. If you do less, you are not do ing your full duty as a citizen. We should demonstrate to the world that our form of government is a success, by taking an active part in shaping our governmental affairs. 1 had found it. There is a mighty difference In the measure of culpability of a cheap, sharp little ward politician attempt ing to mislead the public by distor-i tion and misrepresentation and a like distortion and misrepresentation by a Presidential candidate. No one places any confidence in the professional ward politician. He may do or say anything to carry a point and little importance attaches to it. The reason Is that men do not look In his direction for character, and start ling utterances without character do not make .a ripple In the community. But the Presidential candidate, thi actual nominee of a great party, stands out with us as a great figure, a man ot rock-ribbed character, a man ot superb dignity, to whom lit tle acts, small petty acts, the acts ot the sharp little ward politician in matters political, would be abhorrent and impossible. Because ot this ideal of the man selected by his party for the first office In the land, because of this ideal which mirrors the composite of our Presidents from Washington to Wil son, it is shocking to see Mr. Cox de scend to demagogic levels in his fight for election. In what he has said of Republican campaign funds the brazen, blatan, way he has said it has written him down as a person wholly unfit to be President of these luited Slates; has written him down as a man ready tn delude and mislead that he may gain advantage over his opponent in the Presidential race; has written him down as indifferent to facts auJ to the verities of the situation; has written him down as a sharp little man without bigness of soul, bigness of vision or appreciation of the great role he Is playing as the nominee of a great political party for President of the I'nited States. The tacts as disclosed before the Kenyon campaign committee annihi late the Cox charges of the Republi can corruption fund; the facts show that the money so far received by the Republican campaign committee is only a trifle over a million dollars; and getting it in small contributions, as Mr. Hayes hopes to do, is not big with promise for even the necessary amount to run a national political campaign. No one knows better the falsity of the "slush fund" charges he has been making than Governor Cox himself; no one knows better than he that the quota figures of the drive artist mean little in truth; no one knows better than he, a shrewd business man, that it Isn't withia the bounds of possi billty to raise fifteen millons of dol lars in small contributions for cam paign purposes; no one knows better than he that the attitude of the whole country in the matter of campaign outriliutions for both parties has al-iou a road and there is promise of a time. At th 1915 convention of the whore they will spend a few weeks ways bevu "Let New York Pay," and knowing this his slush fuud accusa tions were downright dishonest. New York Sun and Herald.
