'would tomorrow iMuk of war and make war if an occasion they deem ed sufficient offered, such as the sink-' , ing of the Maine. Governor Cox's remark is simply a : play Ing to the mood of reaction1 : w hich in America has naturally and J ! inevitably followed the effort and sac- i not military or mililaristically inclin ed. On the contrary they went into the late war wth considerable doubt and reluctance, and they want to be rid of all Us continences and free to follow their fortunate and peace ful daily existence as soon as possi ble. So they are weary of thinking of wars. But being weary of thinking does not dispose of the duty or desirabil ity of thinking. Politicians, not ouiy of Goernor Cox's persuasion, but, we are si.rry to say, of the Republic an also, have been quick to follow the popular mood. By so doing they exploit a human weakness Instead of protecting the people from it. Being weary of the sacrifices and penalties of wars does not prevent wars, nor does being weary of thins, ing of wars justify not thinking of wars. We do not enjoy thinking of cancer or tuberculosis, of tempest, drought, famine, pestilence, or sud den death. We are weary of all the evils of life, but the statesman or individual who allows hli distaste of them or trying to make provision for dealing with them Is not acting with common sense or in the true Interest of his country or himself. Chicago Tribune. Phill Colin returned the last of the week from Rockaway beach, where, in company with Mrs. Colin, and their daughter, Elinor, they spent several weeks enjoying the ocean breezes. Mrs. Conn and daughter will remain at the beach for some time yet. Nu merous people from Morrow county are spending their vacation at the pleasant Rockaway beaches this sum mer. "The people are weary of wars ami blinking of .irs," says Governor Cox. The people are also eary of ;?oae, of too much labor, of injus tice. T'. e people have never been otherwise than weary of wars except jwheu they were willing to make war. I Stand By Your Guns If some of the persons who write anonymous letters to officials in re gard to Tiolatioss of the laws would place any evidence they may have in the hands of the district attorney and would back up their statements with their oaths, there would be less trou ble in enforcing the laws. It is one thing to be satisfied, in your own mind that the law is being violated nd quite another thing to produce evidence enough to warrant a -conviction or even an arrest. Many well meaning persons complain because this person or that person is not con victed of the violation of some law and at the same time will not testify to facts which they know. Lawbreak ers realize this and take advantage1 of the fact. If you are not willing to furnish the information you have and stand by it, do not write a letter of complaint and leave your name off. You'have a right to demand that officers do their duty, but you should do your duty as a citizen also. Stand by your guns. Tbey are tired of looking backward and of trying to solve the past and its problems." In this Governor Coi speaks not like a statesman but as a politician.
