Increase use of butter substitutes in the last few years is due to their uniform good flavor, and to lark of this quality In butter, says V. D. Chappell, manager of the O. A. C. creamery, in a letter to cream- erymen of Oregon. "C'reamerymen do not realize the seriousness of the proposition con fronting them," Professor Chappell declares. "Quality, regardless of cost, 1 the deciding factor these days, especially the last nine months. If you expect to keep your nose above water in the butter game you IwiU hue to get down to business and make better butter by using uniform methods." A card has been sent to the cream erymen ot the state, with a request that it be filled out and returned. The card calls for Information on acidity ot cream, temperature at churning, churning time, temperature cf wash water, number of revolutions butter la worked in "water, per cent of moisture and salt, and some other vital factors. All information called for can be found in rightly kept churn records, which Professor Chappell says are essential to uniformity of methods, upon which uniform good quality de pends. Information in the reports will be used in conducting experiments at the college, which Is doing everything possible to improve the grade of but ter in Oregon. More Commercial Fertilizer Used. Increase in the use of commercial fertilizers in specialized and intensi fied farming is noted by the depart ment of agricultural chemistry, O. A. C. experiment station. "Their agri cultural value from an economic standpoint Is not yet sufficiently re cognized," says R. H. Robinson, re search specialist. "The belief that commercial fertilizers are as yet un necessary in this state is gradually changing." A list of every brand that can be sold in Oregon this year has been prepared for farmers by the station, and published in a bulletin for free distribution. The list gives the fertility content of every brand. WANTED To hear from owner of , good ranch for sale. State cash price, full particulars. D. F. Bush, Minne apolis, Minn.
