Codling Moth Itusy Hprny. . Codling mollis, hastened by the het days of early June, are emerging in large numbers In various districts of Oregon, and are busy depositing egg for the next worm crop, reports A. L. Lovett, entomologist of the 0. A. C. experiment station. The eggs will begin hatching in 10 days from time ot laying, and to control the worm brood the 30-day spray should be put on three days ahead of their arrival. In the Willamette district this calls for the application starting Monday, June 7. This spray is made of one pound dry lead arsenate to 60 gallons of water. If scab Is present lime-sulfur solution, summer strength, may be used Instead of the water with one pound dry lead arsenate. The colution is npplled to young fruit and foliage so completely that the first meal of the young worm will prove to be his last. m 3PRAGUE3 ' AT CHAUTAUQttt THREE good fresh milk cows for, sale. NATION The needs of a community are re llecled in tho needs of tho country. You cannot have a country of Blip shod, poorly governed cities and towns, and at the same time have a progressive country any more than you can have a community that Is better than the average of Its citi zens. The Chautauqua is preeminently a community activity and no program Is quite complete without a day de voted to self study under tho direction of a constructive critic. It Is one thing to listen to criticisms that offer no remedy most any one can tear down but It is quite a different mat ter to cotisiilt with a keen observer who has traveled much, and carefully studied many communities. Just as a doctor's knowledge is the result of study and observation, so arc W. H. Nation's lectures the results of many conferences with community of ficers tn every part of the United States. Mr. Nation will lecture twice on the fifth day, constructively criticising and counseling our audiences upon com munity problems, Chaiiilwr of Commerce Expansion Movement W'lth practically every community in Oregon organized the intensive canvass throughout the state In the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce expansion movement will begin June 14th. The canvass will continue un til August 1st. The educational hvork In connec tion with the expansion movement, which began several weeks ago, will continue during June and July. Twelve men, composing six teams, of two men each, wilt direct the Inten sive organization work simultaneous ly in six different sections of the state. They will be assisted by eighty community executive committees ap pointed during the state-wide survey conducted preliminary to the inten sive organization work. Leading men in every section of Or egon are affiliated with the State Chamber in the capacity of commit tee chairmen and members in the movement to raise a budget of $450, 000 ($160,000 a year) covering a three year period with which to carry on the development work of the State Chamber. More than t)wo hundred endorsements have been received from these men approving the ex pansion movement and citing the need for Buch an agency as the State Chamber to take the initiative in de velopment problems affecting the en tire state. Of the total sum to be raised, $180,000 ($60,000 a year) covering a three year period will be raised In Portland the week of June 6th. The Portland canvass will be made June 9th, 10th and 11th. The remainder of the budget totaling $270,000 ($90,000 a year) covering a three year period will be raised in the thir ty-six counties outside of Portland, MY Al'TO 'TIS OF THEE My auto 'tis of thee, short road to poverty, of thee I chant. I blew a pile of dough on you three years ago; now you refuso to go, or won't, or can't. Through tdwn and country side you were my joy and pride, a happy day. I loved the gaudy hue, the nice white tires new, but you're down down and out for true, in every way. To thee, old rattle-box, came many bumps and knocks, for thee I grieve. Badly the top is torn, fray ed are the seats and worn; the iwhooping cough affects thy Jiorn, I do believe. Thy perfume swells the breeze, while good folks choke and wheeze as we pass by. I paid for thee a price, 'twould buy a mansion twice; now everybody's yelling "Ice" I hvonder why? Thy motor has the grip, thy spark plug has the pip and woe Is thine, I, too, have suf fered chills, fatigue and kindred ills, endeavoring to pay my bills, since thou were mine. Gone is my bank rolliow, no more 'twould choke the cow, as once before. Yet, if I had the mon, so help me John amen, I'd buy a car again and spend some more. Auto Links. Codling Moth Here. Oregon apple growers are notified by the college entomologist that the codling moth emerged early in June and the 30-day spray should be put on as soon after June 7 as possible Use dry lead arsenate, 1 lb. to 60 gallons of water, or to 60 gallon lime-sulfur If scab Is present.
