' BUILD MARKET ROAD The proposed Butter Creek high way, which when built will run from Lena on the south fork north through this city, and for which a ten mill tux for part of its construc tion was voted last week at a special election in road district No. 45, has already been declared a market road by the state highway commission. With the 'money from the special tax of the above district and that ex pected from the taxpayers in Morrow county, together with the money to be derived through state and federal aid, an excellent highway will be built. According to Allen Thomp son of the state highway commiss ion surveys have already been or dered. Hermiston Heald. MILTON' MAX 19 PRESIDENT A. R. Shumway, of Milton, was el ected president of the Oregon and Southern Idaho departments of the Farmer's Educational and Coopera tive union of America for the com ing year, at the final meeting of the convention held in The Dalles last week. W. W. Harrah of Pendleton was elected a director of the same organization. Ex-President Endorses Episcopal Church Campaign Former President William Howard Taft has just given publicity to a strong endorsement of the nation wide campaign going on In the Epis copal church, for church strengthen ing and financial aid. The endorse ment is of specical interest to looal Episcopalians who are working in the interest of the campaign. The former president says, among other things, "The reaction from the war has been natural but he would be a pessimist indeed who concluded that the lessons and the spirit engen dered by it did not furnish an oppor tunity for the churcli and a founda tion upon which to build." The campaign now on In the Ep iscopal church will continue in many parishes until in January. Every communicant of the church will be visited by parish committies and urg ed it to aid in the campaign by per sonal service. BOX COMPANY IUY3 LOIMJKPOLE PINE The Box Company, of Prairie City, Oregon, has purchased 200 M. feet of lodgepole pine from the For est Service for use in box manufac ture, according to a report received at the local Forest Service office from Forest Supervisor R. M. Evans, of Baker, Oregon. The timber is located on Dixie Creek, ten miles north of Prairie City, on the Whitman National For est. The logs will be banked along the road to the Dixie Meadows mine, and hauled by truck to Prairie City, where the Company's mill is located. This is believed to be a new use for lodgepole timber, which if found practicable opens a way for market ing the large tracts of this species which forestors have found heretofore a puzzling problem in management. The constant demand for box lum ber in fruit growing sections of the Northwest will make a continuous market for this species, provided it is suitable for this use. The contract price for this initial sale is 50 cents per thousand feet. Lena School Districts Will Hold Dance and Social The teachers of the three Lena school districts will give a program and basket social on December 19th, at Lena Hall, which will be followed by a dance. Jamison of the United States Biological Survey has been spending several weeks in the coun ties of Umatilla and Morrow and will assist County Agent Hunt in putting on the rabbit poisoning campaign in this county.
