Jarrell and Bill Clark, two men who were sent up from Umatilla county about a year ago for operating a moonshine still in the mountains back of Pendleton, recently complet ed a tc.ru i.i u.e M-untuidh county jail and are Dein5 examined in As toria before United States Commis sioner Carney on a charge of operat ing a still without filing a bond with the government. No defense was of fered by the men, although the de fendants pleaded not guilty. They were held to await the action of the federal grand. jury with bond fixed at $1000 each. . Arlington Men Take Masonic Degrees. A. E. Blackburn, station agent. Earl Sego, telegraph operator, and Perry Lawrence of the state highway department, came up from Arlington last Thursdav and formed a team which took the Royal Arch degrees at the Heppner lodge of Masons. They were accompanied by Ell Carpenter of Arlington. Mr. Lawrence lives in Eugene and it was through instruc tions from the lodge at Eugene that Mr. Lawrence was given the degrees by the local lodge. State Fire Marshal Visits. George W. Stokes, deputy state fire marshal, was in Heppner last Fri day from Salem making an official visit in order to observe conditions here as they pertain to fire protec tion and fire preventon. Mr. Stokes expressed himself as being sorry to learn that Heppner no longer had a fire chief and hopes to see a compet ent man again placed at the head of the fire department in the near fu ture.
