Morrow county Liberty Loan Cam aisn was properly launched In Hi p.ner this week. The first gun was'ilred at the High School Au-, dL.'i lusi on Saturday evening, when a crowd gathered there that filled the place to overflowing. Spoach making and music was tho order of the evening, the meeting being happi ly presided over by V. P. Mahoney, who introduced the speakers of the evening. Rev. Father O'Rourke, of Hcpimer, Rev. George B. Van Waters of Portland, and Lieut. Gallagher, re turned Canadian horseman. The messages these gentlemen brought were of high order. Music Inter spersed the speechmaking. Other meetings have been held throughout the county during the week, and the people have in each in stance been well entertained and in structed. The work of taking pledges goes on, but to date the response has been somewhat disappointing to the several hard working committees. Chairman Shutt had hoped that the drive would be put over by the 28th but to date the total subscriptions amount to about $110,000, with but two days left to complete the task of getting the quota. There is a general sort of apathy which seems hard to overcome. Another feature Just now that the solicitors are meeting with, Is the fact that but comparatively few farmers have sold their wheat, con sequently the work goes slowly among this class of citizens. A month later and the most of them will be in funds. A few districts are getting well up on their quotas, Lexington having completed hers, and as usual goes over the top first. It had been hoped that the Mor row County quota would be raised by voluntary subscriptions, but it now looks like different plans will have to be adopted. The raising of the quota this drive means a doubling up on all former subscriptions. The workers are not meeting with this en couragement just now. Nevertheless Morrow county MUST GO OVER, and we believe she will. RUSHING TOWARD AUTOCRACY If the people of the United States of American are permitted to work out our own national life, without being amalgamated with interna tionalism with the loss of American ism, we can in all probability help bring up gradually the lower order of some of the other nations. We have been making rapid strides toward a well disseminated higher level of life, generally rec ognized as distinctly American. The evolution to this end was un mistakably rapid. In the midst of the popular cry however, of democracy for all the world, we here in America under the slogan of "War Necessity" are now rushing at most dangerous (speed toward autocracy. The ideal balance we were stead ily approaching has suddenly given way to the popular idea of Bolshe vism born of Russian despotism. It is well to bear in mind that autocracy exists the moment any country is controlled wholly by the "higher ups" or wholly by the "lower downs." Sudden transition from either one to the other is revolutionary and anarchistic. The great question for the Ameri can people to decide is whether we Khali continue the sound course which has given our national success the American brand, or are we about to revert to medieval procedure, when the state will completely obliterate American initiative aud American individualism. Denver News. 1- TOMORROW AND TODAY. We hear a good deal about the world of tomorrow, about "a new ocial order," and a revolution that will level all distinctions and equa lize all property rights. Dreams, idle dreams, the same dreams that we have been having ever since the dawn of creation, and that we shall have as long as man continues to be a little lower than the angels. The age of miracles has passed. Perfection does not exist outside of Paradise. Equality is impossible as long as man is born as he is some with more gray matter than muscu lar tissue. The cream will rise to the top. The world is round, but it is un even. It has its hills and dales, Its valleys and its mountains, its seas find Its deserts. They are all precisely like those men have had from the days when the greatest of all Teachers stood on the shores of Galilee and taught the gospsl of respect for cq: Ftltuted authorl:r and regard for the feelings of His fellow-men. In a single instance, when It was sought to confound Him, He directed His disciples to "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's." A golden rule for the mischief-makers of today to bear In mind. It is too bad that the dreamers who would construct the world, re create man and re-endow woman, do not pay a little more attention to the Great Teacher and the sublime wis dom He taught. When He climbed Gethsemane, he bore a cross not His own, but that ot a suffering world. The world will always suffer, until it listens to His voice, heeds His counsel, and follows in His footsteps. Leslie's. ' ' Getting Ddoenieot Dog. The big steam shovel Is busy this week excavating the basement tor the new Gilliam & Blsbee building on the Vic Groshens corner. It Is not the intention of the owners to begin building operations this season, but they expect to commence work on the superstructure early In the Spring. However, they considered It a good time to get the dirt removed! from the basement while the steam shovel was available, and the rapidity with which the work is being ac complished proves that the firm Is showing good judgment.
