OUR ATTITUDE TOWARD ENEMY PEOPLES. "We do not wish in any way to im pair or to rearrange the Austrian- Hungarian Empire. It is no affair of ours what they do with their own life. either industrially or politically. We do not purpose or desire to dictate to them in any way. We only desire to see that their affairs are left in their own hands, in ali matters, great or small. "We shall hope to secure for the people of the Balkan Peninsula and the Turkish Empire the power and right to make their' own lives safe, their own fortunes secure against op pression or Injustice and from the dictation of foreign courts or parties. "And our attitude with regard to Germany herself is of a like kind. We Intend no wrong against the German Empire, no interference with her in ternal affairs. We are in fact fighting for her people's emancipa tion from fear along with our own from that fear as well as from the fact of unjust attack by neighbors, or rivals or schemers after world empire No one is threatening the existence or independence ot the peaceful en terpris of the German Empire." Madison Wis., Jan. 15 Speaking at the University of Wisconsin, Otto H. Kahn, of the banking Arm of Kalin Loeb & Co., of New York city, said in part: "Wherever in this fateful time true Americans are gathered together. their thoughts will turn to a purpose which is one and the same wherever, throughout the world, the language of free men Is spoken. "It is the purpose of a common de termination to fight and to bear and to dare everything and never to cease nor' rest until the accursed spirit which has brought upon the world the unutterable calamity, the devil's visitation, of this appalling war, is destroyed beyond all possibility ot resurrect leu. "Rome there are, a small minority always, and getting smaller every day, among Americans of German birth or descent who lack the vision to see their duty or the strength to folliw it, and who stant irresolute, hesitant and dazed. "The vast and overwhelming ma jority have acted like true men and loyal Americans. They are entitled to claim your sympathetic under standing for the heartache which is theirs, and they-are entitled to claim your, trust. It will not be misplaced. "I am taking very little account of that insignificant number of men of German origin who misguided or cor rupt, dare by insidious and under ground processes to attempt to weak en or oppose the resolute will ot the nation. There are too few of them to count and their manoeuyers are too clumsy to be effective. But let them be warned. "There is sweeping through the country a mighty waveband its cur rent is from West to East of stern and grim determination, which bodes ill for any one standing in its way. "One element there is in our popu lation which does deliberately chal lenge our national unity. "I mean the Bolsheviki in our midst, tje preachers of liberty run amuck, who would place a visionary class interest above patriotism and who in ignorant fasaticlsm would substitute for the tyranny of autoc racy the more Intolerable tyranny ot mob-rule, as for the time being they havo done in Russia. "If it were not for the desertion of Russia, the battle against autocracy would have been won by now. As so often before, liberty has been wound ed In the hnise of its friends. Liber ty In the wild and freakish hands of fanatics has once more, as frequently in the past, proved the effective help mate of autocracy and the twin brother of tyranny, j "Outczarlng the czar its votaries are filling the prisons with their po litical opponents, are . suppressing, m m SB m m FIRST NATIONAL BANK Jjfi II Ii B P C i ss.sssssssulj t We are now established in our new Banking home with modern equipment and every facility to care for the interest of our customers.
