Corvallis, Ore., Dec. 4 la It cheap er In your orchard to adjust the plant food supply to stimulate growth by pruning out or by supplying addition al nitrates in fertilizer, tillage, cover crops? This is one of the questions that orchardlsts taking the pruning school work at 0. A. C. next week, Dec. 10 to 15, will be helped to an swer. How pruning helps to adjust the delicate balance requisite to growth of tree and fruit production will be explained by Dr, E. J. Kraus, who has just completed one of a series of im portant investigations along these lines-'. A vast fund of interesting, practical and new information has been discovered and some of it .will be announced for the first time in the pruning course. "Not knowing the relation between pruning and nutrition," says Dr. Kraus, "we have pruned largely by blind faith that somehow it would pay. But sometimes it did not, arid In- addition to "this disappointment was the loss of time and labor. The nev plan is practical, for it helps us tn make iust the form of investment that will produce the biggest returns. which Is all we mean by practical." This new knowledge of Dlant control for growth and fruiting ap plies as well to garden plants as to or chard trees, because it is fundamen tal.' It shows how tender plants toughen when carbohydrates accrue in excess; and how literally to "take thp starch out of them." . Other Tylff features of the course are how to keep worms out of apples, how to control scab and Diignt, and ho to protect the fruit and obtain erowth by pruning, tillage, and fertu izer. from the ravages on insect ana disease enemies. fcnrtnn H. Peck, of Sagenhurst Farm, Rhea creek, was in town on Monday. Mr. Peck has been doing i(me sesrlln'; on the Peck farm near Lexington and states that the recent H. V. Gates, president of Heppner Light & Water Co., is here this week from his home at TerreDonne, ure gon, attending to business interests of his company.
