A soldier who we will say is just 21 years of age can take out a policy for ten thousand dollars (which is the full amount permitted under the law) for $6.50 per thousand per year or LIVE CECIL NEWS ITEMS T. The amount the Govern ment will pay is fixed by law $15 for wife, $25 for wife and child, $32 for wife and two children and $5 tor each additional child. For one par ent $10, and tor two parents $20, and $5 for each brother or sister. The soldier of course must pay them the same, except that he need not give more than half of his pay, and he can't give less than $15 per month. Civil Service Commission will hald examinations for typewrit ers and stenographers and typewrit ers on December 1, December 14, 1917, and January 5, 1918.. 10,000 typewriters, stenographers and type writers are wanted for the Govern ment Service, and all persons who have this knowledge are urged to ap ply for examination. Practically all persons who pass the typewriter or stenographer and typewriter exam inations and are willing to accept em ployment in Washington, D. Mr. McMillan of Lexington was in Cecil doing business with Peter Bauernflend Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Art Minor spent the week-end at The Last Camp, and at tended the basket social. Mrs. Jas. Montague of Eight Mile presented Mr. Montague with a big boy Wednesday morning. J. H. Franklin, Jack Hynd and T. H. Lowe were Morgan visitors Mon day, explaining the road election. Mrs. T. H. Lowe visited Grandma Melton who had one of her sick spells again, and is now much improved. , Albert Wilbur of Cecil left tor Rhode Island. W. A. Thomas saw him otT from the Junction Wednes day. J. H. Miller stayed over night at the Franklin ranch Monday, leaving for his place In his Ford early next morning. T. J. Forkner, who has been work ing for J. W. Osborn for the past few weeks is now taking a little lay oft owing to a severe cold. Karl Farnsworth of Rhea Siding was Informed Wednesday that there was a new daughter In Heppner for him. Karl says he will not require any hired help Just now. Harvey S. Ewing, Roy Duncan, John Mclntire and John Nash were at the election at Morgan Tuesday also A. Henriksen, Jack Hynd, J. W. Os born and all the Cecllites. The basket social organized by Mrs. T. H. Lowe in aid of the Red Cross was a bumping success, up wards of 200 people being present. Arlington, Cooseberry, Montague lone, Morgan and Cecil being repre sented. A lively waltz was played by H. S. Ewing and Paul Anderson, starting off the evening's entertain ment. Basket selling commenced at 10 o'clock. There were 37 baskets in all sold, making from $4.50 up to $12.50 each. Some of them were very beautiful designs, one in par ticular, a bachelor's basket for ladies only to bid, was sold for $12.00 Dancing was continued until 2:30 a m. Music was voluntarily furnished by Mr, Ewing and Mr. Anderson, as sisted by Miss Irene Douglas. Great praise is due to A Henriksen for the able and efficient manner in which he disposed of the baskets as auctioneer H. S. Ewing was clerk and had rather a strenuous time for a while. If you want to be a volunteer, now is the time to enlist. After Devember 15, when the new draft regulations become effective, men of draft age will not be permitted to enlist volun tarily In tiie army, navy or marine corps. . Under the new classification sys tem through which the draft will be conducted after Questionnaires to be sent every registered man In the next few weeks have been answered and returned to local boards, these men will be held for service under the draft. There are only two exceptions to this new rule. Here Is the exact lan guage of the regulations In regard to the first exception: "Upon presentation to a recruiting officer of ac ertlflcate by his 'local board to hte effect that his class and order number are so low that he Is not within the current quota of his local board, any registrant may en list voluntarily in the Navy of in the Marine Corps." But no provision is made for vol untary enlistment of men of draft age In the Army. The other exception has to do with medical students, hospital Internes, dentists, dental students, veterinar ians or veterinary students, who will be permitted under regulatilns to be drawn up by the Surgeon General of the Army, to enlist in the Enlisted Reserve Corps of the Medical Depart ment. The rn,v rule does not affect vol untary enlistments by men not of draft age, Aaron Peterson, of, Eight Mile, was in Heppner Saturday and remained over Sunday with his family now re siding here for the winter.
