DOBLE & SON, Irrigon, Oregon. EXPLOSIONS JAR NEW YORK DURING BATTLES Not since the munitions explosions on Black Tom Island In New York Bay had the countryside along the north' shore of Staten Island rever berated with such terrific concus sions as when Greater Vltagraph staked its military scenes of "Wo manhood, the Glory of a Nation," featuring Alice Joyce and Harry Morey which is at the Star theatre on Saturday, Nov. 3. The islanders turned out en masse to watch the sway and surge of battle. They are the first Americans, treated as a com munity, who have any Bemblance of modern war tactics as conducted be fore Verdun and on the Somrae. Her was a great departure from the old fashioned type of battle scene done for show purposes. Staten Island, a stone's throw from Manhatten, rocked under the roar of great guns to make Vitagraph's great spectacle for American military pre paredness convincing. Staten Island saw the sky ablaze at night with il luminating bombs. It beheld trench mortars hurling their explosives into the opposing burrows a few yards away. It gaped at troops, sheltered by curtin Are, hacking their way through barbed wire entanglements to rush the snug, sandbagged trench forts. It marveled at huge howitzers and 42-centimeter cannon. It shud dered and retreated in a panic at fhe gas attacks with their sinister, saf fron clouds stealing before the breeze upon the doomed defenders of other wise impregnable positions. Commodore J. Stuart Blacton, who personally produced this picture had the co-operation of the 13th Coast Defense Command, N. G. N. Y., and a company of regulars from the United States Army. The 660 men of this command weitf into camp and lived there for two weeks under strict camp conditions. The ordinarily mild aspect of the rolling terrain was changed with pick and spade until it seamed like the wrinkled face of Mars with trenches and bomb setters. Then command ing positions and ambushes alike were altered with the long blue-black muzzles of heavy guns as monuments Of ripatrunHnn i i i. ( . v.uu. xuecr engines lurn- . ed in the trenches. Pipe colls and gas masks and steel headgear and hand grenades and parachutes were behind the lines. Observation bal loons, aeroplanes and armored cars were close at hand. All these things had been assembled for the big scenes. And although days and days were spent in filming these scenes and hundreds of thousands of dollars In securing them, they only compose vivid flashes In the finished produc tion, lending atmosphere and color to the soul-stirlng production as a whole. - NOTICE Having bought the Wat. tenburger wood saw, I am now pre pared to do your wood cutting on short notice.
