The American people are asked to eliminate waste and to substitute other foods in order to save wheat, meat, sugar and dairy products. They are not asked to starve them selves, or even to eat less, but they are asked to help by practicing the "gospel of the clean plate" and by eating more corn and rye instead of so much wheat and by eating more fish, poultry, and eggs, andless meat. Mothers and fathers have parted with their boys, sisters have given up their brothers,- wives have said good by to husbands, and sweethearts have seen their lovers depart for the from. No one who has not been included among these can fully realize the sac rifice they have made. And, the boys themselvesf think what they are do ing. They are going out to give up their lives, if need be, that we may not be compelled to yield to the rule of a foreign autocracy. Is that any small matter? And should we hesi tate to make some sacrifice that these brave boys and their comrades in arms may have something to eat while they are fighting our battles! Then let us do our part. Let us sign up with Mr. Hoover to do the best we can to eliminate waste and to con serve the staple foods. Let us be ready to do a little work to get every home signed up on the pledgo cards and to get those patriotic membership window cards placed in every home. We are asked to enlist in the service of the United States, and if our coun try Is worth anything to us, let us en list and try to enlist every man, wo man, boy and girl. Under the direction of State Super intendent Churchill, the schools will undertake to enlist the people by se curing the signatures to the pledge cards. They will distribute the home cards and also the membership cards 'of $1,700. Patronize Home Industry We compete with any first-class tafloring house in Portland both in material and workmanship.
