It is cur pleasure to record this week the passing of another one of those wooden awnings. Sixty or sev enty feet of civic eye sores passed for ever from view at a single sweep of the carpenter's hammer and there has been left in its place a modern store front and all the up-to-date finish ings. The result of the improvement is so pleasing that other1 property owners are bound to catch the idea. Let the good work go on. Muii Di.Miuidilies. Thursday, August 9, 1917, The second number of the "Ore gon Exchanges" has arrived at our desk. The breezy, neatly printed and excellently edited journal is pure ly a newspaper man's magazine. It deals with questions of vital interest to journalists and printers and is de voted to the upbuilding of journalism in Oregon. "Oregon Exchanges" is published by the School of Journal ism at the University of Oregon. One of the features of the magazine is that department, "All over Oregon" which will be the proper method of keeping each newspaperman posted on the actions of every other newspa perman In the state. The Idea for such a magazine had its incipiency in the brain of Eric W. Allen, dean of the School of Journalism and he is largely responsible for putting it over in such a successful fashion. We shall look forward to the next issue. tt Are you reading Ambassador Ger ard's articles now appearing in the Morning Oregonian? They are In teresting in the extreme and give us first hand facts of the European war situation that we have not received before. "We have thought It was the heighth of folly," says the Canyon City Blue Mountain Eagle, "for the county to import flour, bacon, ham, lard and hay, but when It conies to shipping in cord wood the limit is be ing reached." The same thought has c'ome to our minds many, many times, and especially when we have had to pay a high price for fuel. Less than twenty miles away is a forest heavily laden and the timber is of a quality far exceeding much that is shipped in from outside. We hear rumors of a fuel shortage. If such a thing de velops, it may be the means of open ing our eyes to wliat we have near at hand and also result in opening up Publicity in Draft Exemption. Are you going to claim exemption from military service before the draft board, or are you gong to take your medicine without a murmur? The local newspapers have been requested to print the complete list of those who have made exemption claims, and all the reasons given why the claimant should not be drafted tnto military service. In order that the fullest publicity begiven in the mat ter, the local press will give all the details in the claims as made before the local exemption board.
