In times of prosperity tbe issu ing corporations have no difficulty iu meeting Interest charges. Iu times of depression dividends on stocks may be suspended, but the enterprise must pay interest on its bonds or submit to fowli'sure. And In such event the bondholder rarely suffers loss. "A great many men who are well enough informed ou other topics do uot kuow the first principles of how to conserve their eyesight," Dr. Eugene L. Fisk is quoted iu World's Work. "They may be conscious of eye strain and yet unconsciously go right on do In; many things to increase thut strain, things such as these reading a news paper on a Jiggly street car, working with a light directly behind them or directly in their faces, reading or work ing In too bright u glare or in a dim or flickering illumination. They buy worthless put cut uostrums for the eye and have a positive Ureal .about udopting glasses. The price they pay for nil this is often extremely dear. Concerning the breathing apparatus of tbo whale an eminent naturalist says: "Tha windpipe does not com mtuikate with tbe mouth. A hole is. as it were, bored right through the bark of the head. Engines s would do well to copy the action of the valve of (In whale's blow hole. A mure per feit piece of strut lure it is Impossible to imagine. Day and night, asleep or iuval:i the whale works his breathing apl.arutus in such a manner that nol a d:np o'.' water ever gets down into the lungs. Again, the whale must of necessity stay u much longer period under vviit.r than seals. This alow ;ir!;;hi possibly drown him, inasmuch as tlie luin;s cannot have access to fresh air. Wu find that this difficulty has bcjen anticipated and obviated by a peculiar reservoir In the venous sys tem, which nscrvoir is situated at the back of the lungs." Marked the Snakes. A member of the house of represent atives last season had a habit of marking certain bills on his bill file with a blue pencil, making curious spiral, wriggly lines all over the face of each bill be marked. "Why do you mark your bill tile In that manner?" one day usked the legls Inter who sat next to him. "I do that," be answered, "because them bills has a snake iu them, and they ain't goin' to wriggle through without my votin' agin them. 1 know them when 1 get them by the blue snake marks." Oscar Minor was up to the head waters of Ditch creek the first of the week to look up the proposition of turnjng a part of the water of that creek into Willow creek. For this purpose a ditch had been construct ed across Ditch creek prairie last sea son and a dam put in to divert the water. Mr. Minor found the ditch in excellent condition aud it required but fifteen minutes work to mend the dam and now the water is com ing down Willow creek. While it is not a very large stream, it helps in keeping up the supply of water in Willow creek. Willow creek has been running pretty low at Heppner the past week, owing to the fact that the people above town bave been using the waters at a lively rate. As a cou sequence there has not been sufficient water to supply the street sorlnkler and the people of Heppner have been eating dirt at a good rate, and it has gone down well with the excessive heat. Fire Started By Hot Sun. Alex Green reports that a first class fire was started at his home on the north side of Alkali street last Saturday afternoon, by the concen tration of the rays of the hot sun through a front window. The cur tains were entirely burned and the room under fair way to be badly scorched .when the fire was dfscovr ered. Mr. Green can acount for the fire in no other way than that the sun's rays were so reflected and con centrated on the curtains sufficient to fire them. Off For Extensive Eastern Trip.
