L A BETTER GRADE Changes in the location of the road at various points between Pilot Rock and Heppner, assure that this stretch will be one of easy grades, is the in formation given the Record by Depu ty State Engineer M. O. Bennett, whose force of surveyors have been at work on this road for several weeks past. Mr. Bennett was here Monday and Announces that his crew has now laid out the entire road as it will be permanently improved under the recently adopted bonding act. Chief among the changes that will be made will be the routing of the road at the upper end of Hog Hollow through the south fork of the canyon instead of the present route, the elim ination of the present Franklin Hill and the Jones Hill grades. The new survey is made to conform with the policy of the state engineering de partment, doing away with all grades of more than five per cent where practicable. The new Hog Hollow road, in going up the south canyon, will save a distance of approximately one mile and will not have a grade of more than five per cent. It will strike the present road again at the corner about a half mile south of the head of the canyon from which the road now enters the head of the Hollow. In changing the road out of Little But ter creek, the surveyors at first met with strong opposition from the Mor row County Court, who built the new Franklin Hill grade only two or three years ago at a cost of several thous and dollars. It has a grade of 6 per cent most of the way but is 9 per cent near the top and the rocks are bad in many places before the straight stretch to the south is reach ed. The new survey calls for the grade to lead out from the creek near the John Brosnan ranch, a half mile south of the bottom of the present grade and connects with the present road again about a mile east of the ROAD WIL HA J top of old Franklin grade. The new irade will not exceed five per cent at any place and cuts one-half mile off the distance. The Jones hill leads out of the can yon running up from Lena towards Heppner. The present grade was built last spring and changed to the north side of the canyon. The sur veyors have discovered a much easier ; grade which will leave the present road at a point between the Sheridan and Kilcup ranches, going up a can yon and dropping over into Hinton creek on a very slight grade. While it may seem a great deal like extravagance in making these chang es, it is the announced policy of the engineering department and the Stats Highway Commission that all work to be done In the future should be done I with the view of making the roads' permanently located. Mr. Bennett Is of the opinion that some of the nre- I liminary work towards macadamizing this 45-mile stretch will be done bv the state during this fall. Pilot Rock Record. FOR SALE.
