The move would be in direct line of patriotic progress and the training which would be obtained from this source may prove of invaluable service later on. There are a number of men within the city who are fa miliar with military tactics. Some have seen actual warfare, while others have received thorough training at some of out best military schools. . Since the declaration of war, there has been a growing un rest among young men here who are now students of, high school. These young fellows are full of pep and their energies know almost no bounds. Such an organization as the home guard would give them an opportunity to drill, and at the same time thev would not find it necessary to sacrifice their school work at this time. Merely as a suggestion, we would like to see some of the Spanish-American war veterans and others who have had mil . . . - j 1 1 - IT itarv training, get together and organize tlie Home guara. we are sure that the ranks of the "awkward squad" would not he slow in filling up. THE WOMEN WILL GET RESULTS. In appointing a strong committee of women to start the Red Cross organization in Heppner, there can be no doubt about a strong, successful organization being formed. It will take a few days to get the preliminary work started, such as getting the charter. After that, it will be largely a matter of getting members, and the more members acquired, the greater will be the scope of the organization's work. In the large cities, the Red Cross work is being carried on in a magnitude which will mean millions of dollars and a horde nf tnpn flnrl women that will be at the Nation's right hand to assist in this important branch of national sen-ice. HEPPNER, OREGON TO THE FARMERS AND STOCK 1 1 i 1 GROWERS OF OUR TERRITORY In the face of the grave crisis now confronting this nation it Is the patriotic duty of every citizen to serve his country In the most effec tive manner' that presents itself. The most effective way for the farmer to serve his country at this time Is to plant every available acre of land that can bo cultivated into some kind of food crop for man or beast. It Is our duty to serve the nation by extending such financial aid to the farmer as will enable him to till every available foot of land, as well as promote the live stock industry. We are prepared to assist all solvent farmers in a financial way, not only for the purchase of seed grain and money to get their crop In, but will also agree to finance them through the growth and har vesting of the crop and until such a time as same can be marketed conveniently and to a good advantage. The price of grain and hay as well as cattle and hogs Is bound to be high for some time to come, and now Is the time to prepare to, seed every available acre, as well as to Increase the number of domestic animals. Hemember, this will not only yield you a big profit, but It is your duty to serve your country In this manner. Drop In and let us talk It over. The First National Bank of Heppner J
