Beach of Beach & Allyn, lo cal dealers for the Reo and Dort cars has just returned from the Eighth Annual Automobile Snow whlcn was iit.li! at Portland last week. It has been conceded by all who attended the show that this is the largest and most successful Automobile Show ever held iu the Northwest. Decorated to represent the great Columbia Highway with a canopy of blue and white and beautifully paint ed scenes along the walls, the Armo ry was a fitting back ground for the display of motor cars. Automobiles of every known make and design ivpro -shown to erow'ds of enthusias tic snectators who thronged the building both afternoons and even ings. At the booth of the Northwest Auto Company, distributors for the Northwest and the home of the Mar mnn. Cole. Reo. and Dort pleasure cars, as well as the Reo, Stewart and Indiana trucks, could be seen especially' designed models of each make of car fourteen in all. In truth, it was a magnificent display. Tt Is interesting to note tnat tue Dort factory considered the Port land Automobile Show of sufficient imnortance to send two of their re presentatives there with a specially made cut-out chassis, painted vuiue and gray and showing all working parts to splendid advantage. Messrs. Jas. Robertson ana w. m. Riich. Service Engineer of the Dort Motor Car Company, each afternoon and eveuing delivered very interest ing lectures explaining the peculiar features of the Dort. These lectures were listened to by crowds who gath ered about the chassis and were a source of education to many. They spoke in part as follows: "Every permanent organization must have a foundation which, in motor cars, is the frame. The Dort frame is made of finest grade, heavy Dressed steel, re-inforced by pressed steel cross members, with angle nlates hot rivetted at all corners. preventing all possibility of the frame becoming twisted under the most severe usage. "Exceptionally strong construction is carried out all through the car front axle unusually heavy, front snrinas longer, being 37 inches long and 2 inches wide; beam and steer ing knuckles double heat treated, preventing flaws or weakness. "Most 'important of all is the pow er plant, which in the Dort was de 'niened bv Mr. Etiene Planche, a frenchman by birth and the original designer of the Peugeot famous rac ing car. This noted engineer has developed a motor in the Dort cap able of maximum speed of 33 H. P. at but 1900 revolutions per minute. To those mechanically inclined, this fact speaks for itself. "Peculiar to the Dort are the fol lowing superior features: The doub le exhaust; the Carter carburetor. of the fixed jets type, fool-proof and Im possible to get out of adjustment; the Connecticut automatic ignition system which is appearing on many hieh Driced cars with marked suc cess and insuring a very hot spark; wonderful rear springs 50 Yi inches long of the .true cantilever type, giv ing the Dort the reputation of being the easiest ruling car oi us size on the market; a rear axle so well made and so strong that a fac tory service department of several months standing has never been call ed upon to roplace one; a Westing house starting and lighting system used by 26 of the leading cars in America, two of them the highest priced manfactured. "The slogan of the Dort factory is indeed a true one "The Quality Goes Clear Through." Err-F Chilly, changeable weather? A good oil heater will keep you warm andcosy. . In the recruiting district of Ore gon during the month of January there were 126 men enlisted in the Regular Army, which is very en couraging as it is considerably more than the monthly quota fixed by the War Department for this State. A nother very encouraging feature about this Is, that a goodly number of these men were accepted by post masters throughout the State. There are in the United States 65,000 avail able postmaster recrultmg agents, and it Is thought by the War De partment officials that the recruit ing problem will be solved whenever there are three or four active post master recruiting agents in each county, which is the recruiting unit FOR SALF 1840 Acre Wheat and Stock Ranch, well improved.
