J i r THE GAZETTE-TIMES, HEppNER, ORE.. THURSDAY, OCT. 2. lilt PAGE THREX t t FALL SAMPLIES W III LATEST PAH Prices i Bwh bom'l Always i EhusidL BALLOT TITLES CON FUSING TO VOTERS Danger of Mistaking Single Tu For Kural Credits. Winter comi is "The Full Rental Value Land Tax & Homemaker's Loan Fund Amend ment" la the ballot title for measure No. 306 & 307. "The Rural Credits Amendment" is the ballot title (or amendment No. 318 & 319. There is danger that these titles may be confusing. The word "loan" in No. 306 & 307 may lead some voters to believe that It is "The Rural Credits Amendment." Voters should be very careful In distinguishing be tween these two measures on election day. There Is the widest possible dif ference in the effect which the adop tion of these two measures would 'have. Amendment No. 306 ft 307 is a single tax measure and has for its purpose the confiscation of private ownership in land. Amendment No. 318 & 319 is Just what its name implies: an amedment giving rural credits or cheap money to the far mers. The first amendment No. 306 & 307 would simply ruin the state of Oregon if it were adopted. The last amendment No. 318 & 319 will build up Oregon by giving the farmer sheap money with which to bring his farm up to a high state of improvement and cultivation. To defeat single tax vote 307 X NO. To get Rural Credits vote 318 X YES. Wal- Cold, rainy days-then you'll appreciate the cosy, cheery warmth of a good oil heater. Auto trucks give promise of solv ing the freight transportation prob lem for interior Wallowa county points. Two heavy trucks are now in service between Enterprise and outlying points, and they have prov ed a great success while the roads are hard and at all smooth. The first truck was put into this service by the W. H. Bohnenkamp store at Flora. Since the roads set tled in the spring the car has been used steadily and has hauled sever al hundred tons of freight to the north end store. It has been in de mand frequently for passenger trav el, also, as it makes far better time than a team drawing a toad. This fall a greater innovation was introduced by B. W. Hamilton and his son O. S. Hamilton. They bought a new three ton truck for hauling grain in from the distant farms. It has been in use night and day much 'of the time since threshing got un jder way, making trips to points 30 ! miles from town, near Zumwalt. The j truck carries 65 to 70 sacks of 'wheat, weighing up to 8400 pounds, and is so much faster on the road than horses that grain is moved far quicker than ever before. Frequently the driver would meet a team loaded with grain a few miles out from town. The truck would go to its destination east of Crow creek and return with its load, ov ertaking the horse-drawn freight wagon before reaching town. B. W. Hamilton ran the car on the day run until he was taken ill, and O. S. Hamilton had the night shift. Now the latter is alone on the job, but he is seeking a compe tent driver so that the machine can be kept on the road continuously. The success of auto trucks in the county depends whooly on the roads, When the highways are brought to a condition where they will be hare the year round, the expense - of hauling will be lessened, and the time required will be reduced great ly. Enterprise Record Chieftain. The Naming of Batter Creek. The versions of how Butter creek came to be named have been publish ed by the Tribune as follows: John S. Vinson of Freewater from whom the townsite of Vinson was named gives the orgin, as he heard it from the early settlers. Some travelers in pioneerdays camped on lower Butter creek. Among their edibles was a tub of butter. During the night the animals roaming about the camp rolled the tub with its con tents into the creek. The stream was afterwards called .Butter creek. J. P. Earl is positive that Vinson's version is wrong and he gives the following account: Along in 1848 occured the first Cayuse war, followed by the Whitman massacre. A volunteer army set forth to capture the redskins. S. D. Earl, his father, and an uncle were in this army. It seems they were aid ing the wagons of the commissary which got ahead of the army. Two wagons camped on the creek over night. The men had only sugar and butter to eat until the other wagons caugh up with them. They considered a meal of butter worthy of commemoration and ac cordingly named the creek Butter creek. Echo News. I Tum-A-Lum Saves Geo.
