BIG GUNS FOR THE CANAL No Weapon In the Worid Equal the Sixteen Inch Monster, There is still about a year's work to do on the sixteen inch gun before it is sent to the Panama fortifications. The gnu h-M been ordered shipped to Wa tervliet arsenal, where it will be sent to Watertowu. and the gun will be in stalled in the immense carriage, which Is now neariug completion. At Wa tertowu it will have a shock test, after which the gun and the carriage will be shipped hack to Saudy Hook for dual test. The progress of building the disap pearing carriage is attracting the at tention of ordnance experts of various countries, and great interest will be taken iu the firing test of the gun after It is Installed in its new carriage, it will throw a larger projectile than any gun iu the world. It is estimated that it wiil have an effective range of some thing like sixteen miles, which is be yond that of any other gun in the world. The final tests ut Sandy Hook of two new fourteen inch guns for Pana ma canal fortifications are about com pleted. The ordnance officers are high ly pleased with the success of the tests, and it is stated that a remarka ble record of accuracy was made by the guns on long range firing. Army and Navy Journal. TO HONOR MONROE. Belated Move to Erect a Great Monu ment to His Memory, James Monroe, lifth president of the United States and author of the fa mous "doctrine" which hears his name, was born in Westmoreland county. Va 15i! years ago last spring. Although .Monroe enunciated and definitely announced a policy that lias been n live political Issue lot nearly a century, there has never hecii any general observance of his birthday, and no important memorial has been erect ed to perpetuate his inline. Recently a movement has been start ed to ero' t a Monroe monument, but as vet no definite locution has been de cided on.
