To reduce the dressmaking bills and to render the women of Oregon more independent of the profession al dressmaker, will be the aim of courses in dress making at the Ore gon Agricultural College during the Short Course. Two courses will be given, one for the inexperienced needlewomen, and another for. those who have had ex perience and can give evidence of careful work. The course will offer Instruction in the fundamental principles of dressmaking, the taking of accurate measurements, the interpretation and use ol commercial patterns, econ omical purchasing and cutting of materials, proper fitting and finishing or at least one cotton dress. Miss Moore, Instructor of Domestic Art in the Oregon Agricultural College win enaeavor to make the course most helpful to those who need help in solving some of the perplexing prooiems of the inexperienced dress maker. The class will meet three times each week for two hours. A fee of 25c will be charged. The class will meet in Room 301, Domestic Science Building. The more advanced dressmaking win deal with more complicated proDiems and is meant to give ex perience in the handling of woolen materials. The making of one wool dress will Involve the selection of an appropriate pattern, adjustment of pattern to personal measurements, wise selection or material, wltn es pecial emphasis on harmonious com bination of colors. At a regular meeting of San Souci Rebecca Lodge, held in Heppner, De cember 12, 1915, the following reso lutlons were passed: WHEREAS, Death has again visit ed our lodge and taken from our midst Sister Mattie Summerfield, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That we extend to the sorrowing son and daughter the heartfelt sympathy of this lodge and its members in this sad bereavements remembering that the time may not be far distant when we may be called upon to suffer the loss of a dear one from among our friends or family, and be it RESOLVED, That a copy of these resolutions be fully spread on the rec ords of this lodge, that a copy be sent to Brother Summerfield and his sister, and that a copy be sent to the Gazette-Times and Pacific Odd Fellow for publication, and that the Charter of this lodge be draped in mourning for the period of thirty days. A well will be started two miles north of Stanfield to get water to irrigate 6000 acres of land. Work trains are crossing Coos Bav on the new Willamette Pacific bridge. Merlin has shipped 7 carloads, and Round Prairie 1 carload of Christmas trees to Los Angeles. About 4700 trees to car. Oregon Power Co. has spent $40.- 000 on improvements in North Bend the past year. $500,000 worth of flour is to be shipped from Portland to warring na tions before January 1. W. H. Blair has shipped over 30,- 000 Christmas trees from Canby to California. Pacific Telephone & Telegraph lines in Oregon and Washington would reach a distance of 341,255 miles. The proposed sawmill at Reedsnort will be one of the iargest in Oregon. Clackamas county taxpayers ask county court for 2 mills for roads. J. L. Stockton, president Oregon Retail Dealers Assn. says legislation should be passed exempting new fac tories from taxation for a stated num ber of years. Two more people lulled near Sa lem walking on railroad track. In the interest of public safety, it. should be unlawful to walk on railroad tracks. One-half cent on dollar is increase in women's wages under minimum wage law. Farmers Union of Umatilla coun ty to build a large meat packing plant. Irrigation districts at Redmond are being formed. Minmium wage law gives Portland women workers eight mills more on the dollar. Oregon-Utah Beet Sugar Co. has 3652 acres of laud contracted in Jackson county. The Pompadour Lithia Springs near Ashland have been incorporated at $100,000. The Willamette Valley Southern is likely to build to Silverton in the spring. Gaston has let contract for $7000 water system. O-W. R. & N. Co. will soon have monthly payroll of $10,000 at Pilot Rock Junction, Old Armltage place near Eugene will be first electric farm under Ore gon Power Company's plan to fur nish farms electricity. Announcement has been made that Falls City Lumber Co. will probably open in spring with full crew of 200 men. North Bend business men are con sidering increase of payrolls.
