The Hoys' and Girls' Aid Society
Is making Its annual appeal to the
schools and the public, for Thanks
giving contributions of money, food
supplies and clothing. For thirty
years the Society has been caring for
dependent and neglected children of
Oregon, and it should have the gen
erous support of all citizens interest
ed in child welfare.
During the past year the Society
has cared for 491 children in its Ke
I ceiving home, and supervised over
: 500 children, whom it has placed in
j private homes. Whereas the aim of
; the Society is to place the child a
! quickly as possible In a suitable
home, the care of children at the
Receiving Home is necessarily a
large factor n the work. Such care
includes scientific treatment, for over
SO per cent of the children committed
are not placeable until physical de
fects and ailments are remedied. Un
til they are placeable the children
must live in the Receiving Home,
where everything is done to give
them the advantages of normal child
ren. It is in furtherance of this work
that the co-operation of public spirit
ed people is sought.

There were 29,276 acres of agricul
tural land listed to 515 applicants in
the State of Oregon, and 3,805 acres
listed to 52 applicants in the State of
Washington during the past year by
the Forest Service.
Since the passage of the forest
homestead act, June 11, 1906, there
have been 188,514 acres of agricul
tural land listed to over 2,000 appli
cants -in the States of Oregon and
Washington by the Forest Service.
Of the varied special uses to which
National Forest land is put ,one of
the most interesting is that of school
house. There are thirteen school
: houses within the National Forests
of Washington and Oregon and one
in Alaska. The only churches thus
: far built on National Forest land are
! two in the Tongass Forest, Alalia
No charge is made for this use of the
National Forests. . f
It is estimated that over one hun
dred thousand people visited the Na
tional Forests of Washington and
Oregon for recreation purposes dur
ing the past year. In addition to
this, 25 permits were issued for sum-
; mer homes, making a total number
of S3 permits of this character now
in force on the National Forests of
' the two States.
