Making Rig Showing,
The Heppner mining property lo
cated six miles from the Thomas
ranch on the Middle Fork of the John
Day and owned by D. B. Stalter, of
Austin is developing into a real gold
mine according to W. H .Butler. But
ler at one time worked on Canyon
Mountain and was known here as an
expert pocket hunter. For the last
four years he has been at work on the
Susanville property. His brother, M.
S. Butler is visiting with him. There
Is now about 2000 feet of tunnel
work done on the mine and Mr. But
ler says that there is a big ore chute
which assays $2000 a ton free gold.
The prospects are as encouraging as
could be wanted or reasonably ex
pected. Canyon City Blue Mountain

A man rambled Into a village cafe,
selected a table, and told the attend
ing waiter to bring him half a duck.
Fifteen minutes went by, then anoth
er flfteen,and yet another. Finally
the man at the table began to show
symptoms of impatience. '"What can
I do for you, sir? asked the waiter,
going over to the table in response
to an Imperative call. "What about
my order?" demanded the diner.
"How soon do I get that half a
duck?" "Just as soon as somebody
comes In and orders the other half,"
was the calm rejoinder. "You don't
think we can go out and kill half a
duck, do you?" San Francisco Ar
gonaut. Wo was rleenlv in love with his
wife, but awfully careless about mon-
ov matters. He started awav on a
long business trip leaving her short
of money, and promised to send her a
check, which he forgot to do. The
rent came due and she telegraphed:
"Dead broke. Landlord insistent.
Wire me money." Her husband an-onrororl-
"Am short invself. Will

1 replied: "Never mind money. I gave
' landlord one of the kisses, He was
more than satisfied."
