Jock DonaldBon, an old batchelor residing In Aberdeen, who earned his livelihood by selling firewood, had a donkey and a cart that he went his rounds with. He therefore had to hire a small shed for a stable at a rental of four pounds, this entitling him to a vote. Hard times, however, began to tell on the sale of his fire wood; so much so, in fact, that he had to dispose of his donkey and give up the stable. On the polling night he made his way to the place of vot ing as. usual. The policeman in at tendance told him his name was not on the elector's list that year, and at this Jock flared up and angrily ask ed for an explanation. The police man said: "Aweel, Jock, ye see, ye hlnna got the donkey noo." "Oh, aye I see; it wis the donkey that had the vote, an' no' me!" replied Jock earnestly. San Francisco Argonaut. Hi! June 22, 1915 In competition -with exhibits of sim ilar products from .other states and a number of foreign countries. Ore gon received the gold medal for gen eral excellence of its horticultural display at the Panama-Pacific Expo sition at San Fruncisco a few days ago. This award was made strictly on merit. The Jury was composed of 12 men, 7 from the East, two from Japan, two from California and one from Holland. They made a careful detailed inspection of ev ery exhibit in the kail and without hesitation awardud the medal to Ore gon. The display ws installed by C. N. Ravlin, head of the Oregon Horti cultural Society aud himself a suc cessful rancher of the- Hood River Valley. In arranging the booth, he made no atenipt at ornamentation, concentrating his efforts on so ar ranging the almost faultless collec tion of fruits, vegetables and other products that the attention of the visitor would be instantly centered on the display and not on its sur roundings. Oregon has a rjght to feel tBiighty proud of this rictory. Thirty-six thousand acres of land in Pine Valley, Baker county, will probably be thrown open for entry within a few weeks if present plans are carried out. The tract has for several years been tied up under a Carey Act project the promoters of which failed to raise the necessary funds with which to carry it on. The entire tract is favorably located for irrigation. Definite and accurate information regarding the climate, resources, products and advantages of Oregon has been jnade available to all sec tions of Che United Stotes by the presentation, by the Portland Cham ber of Commerce, of copies of the uregon Almanac to more than 2,500 prominent public libraries. These copie were nt out within the past rew days ana at least 800 acknow. ledgemeots hare already been re ceived. Copies of the Almanac have also been sent to th traffic depart ment oi all railroads and the result ing correspondence indicates that they will hae a raarked effect unon the volume of toortst travel in this direction this year. Ben son, the capitalist who has for sever al ysars been spending his time and money so freely for the improvement of this scenic region. The tract on which the fall is located comprises 380 acres and was purchased by Mr. Benson two years ago for $21,000. In oredr that a channel not less than sixteen feet In depth may be estableshed between Tillamook bar and the docks at Bay City, the gov ernment has ordered the dredge Ore gon to Tillamook Bay and the work will be pushed vigorously until com pleted. It Is expected that the dredge will be employed in that vicinity the balance of this season and all of next. Grasshopper Control By Broadcast- ing Bait. Oregon Agricultural College, Cor- vallis, une 21. "If cooperation can be secured among growers in locali ties where the grasshoppers are bad their ravages can be materially checked," says Professor H. F. Wil son, etomologist of the Oregon Ex periment Station. "Experiments have shown that the old methods of hand ling the hoppers are not as efficient as spreading the poisoned bait by broadcasting. In this way from five to ten pounds of material can be made to cover one acre of ground. "The poison bait is made as fol lows: Bran 50 lbs. . Salt 1 lb. Lemon Extract . . 1 oz. Paris Green 1 lb. Water to make a crumbly mass 'Make up this material in the eve ning and spread the following morn ing before the dew is off the grass Broadcast the bait as if sewing seed and do not put out In plies as there is danger of poisoning stock. "The present year promises to be a bumper year for grasshoppers and many Inquiries are being sent Into the office of the etomologists con cerning control measures and re questing personal visits of members of the staff. Plans had been perfect ed 1n connection with conducting a campaign throughout the eastern part of the state for this season but owing to a discontinuance oi station funds by the last legislature the Col lege Is now without funds for carry lng on work of this kind.
