Notice is hereby given that, where
as the Heppner Commercial Club,
has been communicating with the
Fourth Asststnat Post Master Gener
al at Washington, D. C. for the pur
pose of establishing the Mail Route
between Hardman, Oregon, and Mon
ument, Oregon, and it appears from
such communications that such Mail
Route was discontinued for the only
reason that the bids submitted to
carry the mail on such Mail Route,
were excessive. It is therefore neces
sary in order to enable the Commer
cial Club to further carry on the mat
ter of re-establishing such Mall Route
that such Club have an understand
ing as to the cost of carrying the mail
on such Mail Route.
The Heppner Commercial Club
will, therefore, receive bids for car
rying the mail on the Mail Route ex
tending from Hardman, Oregon, to
Monument, Oregon, such bids to be
filed with the Secretary of the Hepp
ner Commercial Club, at Heppner,
Oregon, on or before the" first day of
July, 1915.

Bud Perry was over from Lone
Rock this week.
Oscar Otto returned yesterday
from a trip to Pilot Rock and Albee,

Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Cochran
motored over from their ranch near
Monument yesterday.
Newberg High School graduated a
class of forty this year 21 girls and
19 boys. Among them was Miss Flor
ence Wharton, daughter or w. s.
Wharton and former residents of
Heppner.
L. Hansen, of Spokane has arrived
in the city and will spend the summer
in this vicinity, providing he can get
work. Anyone needing a man on the
ranch will do well to look this young
fellow up. Inquiries may be made
at this office.
The June eighth grade examina
tion papers are being marked at the
court house this week by Mrs. C. W.
Shurte and Mrs. George M. Clogston.
Supt. Notson informs us that the
papers are not of a very high stan
dard at this time. .
The outside walls of the Star hotel
building are receiving an application
of white paint this week. E. E.
Vickers and his crew of painters are
doing the work. The building, which
belongs to Mrs. Eliza Ayers, is now
leased by Ed Buckman.
W. B. Barratt made a trip by auto
to Monument this week, returning
yesterday afternoon. He found it
"hard sledding" getting through the
mountains beyond Parkers Mill both
coming and going, as the roads are
very bad. There Is- much hauling
over this road at present, as many of
the wool growers of Northern Grant
are sending their clips to Heppner,
and the road Is "cut into very deep
ruts that It is almost Impossible to
get a machine out of when you once
hit them. Mr. Barratt expresses sur
prise that so much trade is coming
this way when the condition of this
road is considered. He found a fine
road on into Monument after reach
ing the Grant county line. Mr. Bar
ratt realizes fully the difficulty of
overcoming the road problem in the
mountains on the Heppner-Monu-ment
road, but it must be done if that
trade is to continue coming this way.
