A report just made by a body of Eng lish physicians indicates that while the use of anesthetics is increasing each year, the number of deaths resulting from tuch use is increasing at a still greater pate. The committee, which was com posed of Drs. U. D. Waller, John Blum leld, 0. A. Buckmaster, Frederick Hewitt and J. A. Gardner, reports that ether, chloroform and alcohol are the worst offenders. Cocaine Is often' used In dentistry to i-ase the pain in extraction. Where the Hums are unhealthy It may result in co caine poisoning. The danger is Increased when the gum is diseased by an abscess. It frequently causes blood poisoning and death. When administered unwisely it cverstimulates the heart action, which results in sudden death. Besides this direct toxicity, much harm may be done through improper steriliza tion of injecting appliances, aggravating, the diseased tissue by driving out the blood and lymph found In the tooth. Therefore, cocaine should only be used in certain dental operations and by men who have a thorough knowledge of the drug, the same may be said of stovaine, novo caine, eucalne. Chloroform, ether and gas are valuable In surgical cases, both in allaying pain and facilitating operations, but they muBt also be administered by specialists who have an Intimate knowledge of their use. It is generally admitted that through out the rural districts conditions favor able to the spread of disease often exist. This makes the sanitation of rural com munities one of the most Important prob lems of the Nation, because of the need of making farm life more attractive In order that a larger proportion of oty population will engage in food produc tion. To demonstrate the feasibility ot improving the sanitation of country dis tricts, tour counties la Idoly-separatei sections were selected Berkeley County, In the mountainous section of West Vir ginia; Lawrence County, Ind., in the Ohio Valley; Union County, Miss., In the far South, and Dorchester County, Md., on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Fif teen officers were engaged In this work, which resulted in the inspection of over 20,000 rural homes, schoolhouses, post offices, railroad stations, churches, etc. So far as known this Is the most exten- live survey of this kind yet made, andt its benefit should soon be perceptible ia the form of lessened death and sickness rates.
