A member ship larger than the combined mem berships of the Portland Chamber of Commerce and tiie Portland Commer cial Club has been secured by the new Chamber of Commerce alter a cam paign engaged in by 77 committees of active business men. Each commit tee consisted of five men and every business house, factory, bank and cilice in Portland was visited. On an average, each committee secured nearly 60 members, making a total of over 4200. There are still a large number of business men to be inter viewed, and those in charge of the work feel sure the 5000 mark will be reached. An entirely new prganization is being perfected, new directors and officers will be chosen, new by-laws adopted and many new lines of ac tivity will be undertaken. Consider able interest centers around the se lection of a business manager to head of the official staff of the new consolidated chamber, owing to the positive declination of C. C. Chapman to continue in that position, as he is leaving to enter private business. It is believed that an outside man will be chosen, altho several prominent Portland business men have been mentioned. It is the intention to secure ilie services of a man thorr oughly experienced in organization work, so that co-operation by Port land with the other communities of the state of Oregon will cover a wid er range than in the past. One of the duties of the new manager will be to visit the different parts of the state and assist the local organizations to strengtiien their membership in pre paration for taking care of the 1915 Exposition travel. Present indica tions are that hundreds of thousands of tourists will visit Oregon and it is hoped that all the commercial bodies of the state will be ready to take care of them. A meeting of the utmost import ance to the sheep and wool raisers of Oregon will be held at Baker on April 1 and 2. J. G. Hoke, Secretary of the Oregon Woolgrowers' Associa tion has sent the following letter to the Portland Commercial Club: "As we are to hold a get-together meeting of the Association at Baker on April 1 and 2, for the purpose of meeting buyers and warehouse men, and also to have a general discussion of the sheep industry, we would ap preciate your giving this meeting as much publicity as possible. We be lieve the time Is opportune for such a meeting and that it will be of a great deal of benefit to all concerned. The sheep men are confronted with conditions that are somewhat unusu al and he is not sure just what move is the best for his interests. It is planned to have some prominent speakers present and to. close the meeting with a banquet." A car load of brood sows has re cently been shipped from the Union Stockyards to Mood River for distri bution among the school children in that valley, and it is possible that in the near future that section will be as famous for its production of live stock as it has in the past been fam ous for its wonderful apples. These brood sows are sold on credit, the children being expected to raise the pigs to maturity and pay the stock yards people when they market the pork. A careful record will bo kept during the period of tiie pigs' growth and the makers of the best records will receive prizes at the end of the season.
