Welch & Co., Baker undertakers, will erect an $S000 building. The Tudor Arms apartment at Portland is to cost $125,000. The Fisher block is to be built at a cost of $9000 at Ueaverton. Redmond wants a starch factory and reports several gold strikes. F. A. Bohle, Lebanon Creamery Co. is building a $3000 bungalow. Washington County grangers op pose advertising on fences and barns. The Pcstoffice at The Dalles is to be constructed of Oregon sandstone. A company has been formed to de velop .Mill Creek Falls near Gold Hill. Assays of sand from the Des Chutes river show $2.50 per ton of gold. Silverton Dist. No. 4 will open bids February 25 on $15,000 school house. The Buxton Planing Mills have built handsome new offices at C'or-vallis. The C. A. Smith mills on Coos Bay will operate in spite of financial straits. The senate passed the bill for new $50,000 Normal Training School at Monmouth. S. Ames has bought the old Craig store at Silverton and will make im provements. , Congress appropriated ' $36(?,000 for Umatilla and $377,000 for Klamath project. Cutting out plate matter and pat ent insides newspapers are giving more men work. The Poulson Logging Camp at In man has resumed operations, em ploying 200 men. The Pciiell Gasoline Co. of Califor nia will install a $500,000 storage system at Portland. H. O. Fry and John Volz have ad ded new machines to Marsh field broom handle plant. Three state development hills were passed by the House to lease the soda lakes, to grant right oi' way over pulilic lands and to sell citizens state annuities. It is not believed that the Prohi bition law as enacted will effect the hop industry, as 98 per cent of the Oregon crop was shipped to other states and countries. The Union Meat Company says the swine industry is falling off in Oregon, while the U. S. census shows a gain of 58,000,000 to 64,000,000 in one year iu the United States.
