Ayers, circuit court. . 21.00 Architecture Building is Finished. University of Oregon, Eugene, Nov. 16. Formal opening of the archi tecture building of the State Uni versity will be held Thursday eve ning, November 19, with W. R. B. Wilcox, of Wilcox & Sayward, Seat tle architects, as the principal speak er. Several Portland architects are also to come. Entertainment and exhibit com mittees are arranging a public re ception with musical program and a loan exhibit from the Portland Chapter of the American Beaux Arts Society and the Massachusetts In stitute of Technology. A collection of Caproni busts will also be shown. The architecture building will be used for other work than architec ture, notably forms of the fine arts. In architecture, 21 students are ma joring during this first year, and Di rector Ellis F. Lawrence expects each succeeding class to be about that number. The building can accomo date 70 students in design and struc tural architecture. - It contains a testing department that is to be equipped with machines for ascer taining the strength of woods, ce ments, and other building material. Additional courses will be added each semester until by 1916 a full four year course in.architecture will have been established. Clyde Wells is putting the finishing touches to his new residence beiow town and will move in before long. At present his family is domiciled in the Jess Hall residence on Balti more street. Mayor's Kelutive Dies. , David Smead, only uncle of May or W. W. Smead. of this ritv. riiwi at his home in Potsdam, New York, on Oct. 30, aged 78 years. He had been an invalid for a number of years and his death was not unex pected. Take Prisoners to Salem. Geo. McDuffee, deputy sheriff took to Salem last Friday, Elmer Beck lund and a man named Hill, who will enter the state penitentiary for an indefinite period. Mr. McDuffee was accompanied by Mr. Emery, city marshal of Hardman. Departed For Wyoming. Adam Knoblock and Frank Mat teson departed yesterday for Sho- shoni, Wyoming, to look after set tling up the business of the late Lin Matteson. They will be absent for some time, in all probability, as upon leaving they had no knowledge of the present status of Mr. Matteson's bus iness anairs. Buys City Residence. Mrs. Melissa Marlatt has purchas ed the residence property next to the hill at the rear of the Club building of C. L. Keithley. Mr. and Mrs. Keithley will soon move to their sub burban property recently purchased of W. O. Minor where they are erect ing a neat residence. Mrs. Marlatt does not expect to move into her property before the coming summer. Visits With Daughter. Mr. Hart, of La Grande, was here the first of the week visiting his daughter, Miss Ruth Hart, who is now stationed here as operator at the O-W. R. & N. depot. Many of the people of this vicinity will remember Mr. Hart as the operator for many years at the Heppner depot. Mr. Hart has had a long period of active service as an operator and now has retired with full pay for life. Echo News. Eight Mile Literary. The Eight Mile literary society will hold their program at the Eight Mile school house on Saturday, Nov, 28. A "program of interest is being pre pared. The feature of the evening will be a debate, "Resolved that cap ital punishment should be abolished in the State of Oregon." Harvie Young and Miss Bowman will take up the burden of proof and Robert Young and Miss Hayes will uphold the negative. Deals in Morrow County Real Estate. Two important real estate deals were transacted last week, whereby 1500 acres of excellent wheat land on Heppner Flat, owned by Crockett Kirk, is sold to Glenn and Alva Jones well known Heppner boys, and grandsons of Mr. Kirk. The deal in volves about $20,000. Mr. Kirk also sold his Rhea creek farm, consisting of 160 acres, to John Sprouls. This is considered as one of the best places on the creek. Sells Heppner Property. S. W. Wattenburger of Pendleton, this week disposed of his residence property in- Heppner to County At torney Glenn Y. Wells who will shortly take up his abode there with his family. This is the property Mr. Wattenburger bought some two years or more ago from E. M. Shutt and is one of the nicest homes in the city. We are not advised as to the consid eration but understand that Mr. Wells struck a good bargain. The Federated Church. Rev. W. N. FERRIS, Pastor. Strangers welcome. Finger Amputated. George, the eight-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Finley had the misfortune to have one of his fingers mashed by a door being closed on it. The accident happened Tuesday morning at the Sand Hollow school house. The children were passing into the school house when the door was suddenly closed and caught the boy's finger and injured it to such an extent that it was necessary to amputate it at the first joint. Dr. Monkman, of Hermiston who has charge of Dr. Dorn's office during his absence performed the operation and states that the boy is improving nicely. Echo "News. Chas.
