Care of Work Teams

than the proper axe and feeding
of the team that are relied upon to do
the farm work; and ai a rule, these
horses do not reeeive the eare and eon-
ideration that they should. A good
none used in eonunonsense manner
should live to an old ace and be in eon
dition to perform good work at all
tunes.
The essential requisites for a working
horse are good size, quick aetion and
trength. A high-spirited animal or one
of great value is not the most desirable
animal for the farmer.
What is needed is a good walker, as
much of the usefulness and efficiency
depends upon that quality. This facul
ty is quite as much the matter of edu
cation as inherited qualities.
Under ordinary circumstances it is
judicious to uso mares for working
teams upon a farm. Except for a short
time, tho period of parturition-and im
mediately after, they aro fully as well
adapted to farm work as geldings. They
also possess the advantago of annually
bringing colts, and in event of their
being incapacitated by accident or labor
thoy may still, bo kept with profit as
breeders.
Horses employed for farm work
should not bo pampered, but should be
fed generously, so as to sustain vigor
and good spirits.
A team ill fed, and consequently in
poor condition and feeble, will not ac
eompliuh much real hard work, and it
is a waste of labor to hire an expensive
hand to drive such a team.
Tho harness, and particularly the
eollar, should be accurately adjusted
to the horse. If the eollar is either too
tight or too loose it galls him and seri
ously affects his breathing.
The workhorses should be fed early
in tho morning, and they should have
a liberal feeding. The comfort and
rest of the team . will be vastly pro
moted if the harness is entirely re
moved at noon while they aro feeding.
Hub them down carefully and cleause
from dust and sweat.
Allow them plenty of time for a
good meal and partial digestion before
they are put to work for tho after
noon. It is poor policy to put them to
work right after eating a hearty meal.
CUBE THE DSnfK HABIT.
TO CL'RK the drink habit substitute
sugar. That is the gist of the ad
vice offered in the Journal of the
Americal Medieal Association, which
calls the idea "a new and logical
treatment of alcoholism."
The articlo says:
"When the body cells aro supplied
with a physiologic balance of car
bohydrates theru is no further doinaud
for alcohol.
"At tho inception of the treatment
the diet is modified to contain an
abundance of tugnr cereals with cane
sugar, sweet fruits, pastries, choco
lates and ice cream are advised.
"In some cases, owing to a distaste
for sugar, this change must be gradual
to prevent rebellion. Here laetoso is
used, a gram every two hours, given in
the form of a medical powder to en
eourage tho psychic effect. Later, as
the demand for alcohol is palliated,
ordinary sugars are taken avidity.
HOOD RIVER SECOND WITH SOFT
FRUITS.
OP ALL the fruit districts shipping
through the Distributors, Hood
River has been second in the
quantity of soft fruits shipped so far
this loason. Tho Yakima Valley dis
trict loads, with 355 cars. Hood River
has shipped 132 cars and Walla Walla
75 cars. There have been 140 cars of
pears, 157 of strawberries, 53 of water
melons and cantaloupes, 40 of cherries
and 185 mixed cars.
At the eloso of business Saturday,
August 12th, the shipments of perish
able fruits aggregated 650 cars, which
ia almost eight times the amount
hipped up to the same dato in 1913.
Last year by August 15 82 cars had
been shipped.
The amount sent ont this year to
date is approximately 50 per cent of
the total amount shipped last year, al
though the season is just approaching
tho rush period. Totul shipments last
year wero 1303 cars.
Tho usual increase this year is duo
to tho fact that the distributors were
not la operation early enough last
year to get soma of the fruit and
that the organization this season is
controlling a greater percentage of
the tonnage of the various districts.
Not a True Indicator.
