HI Agriculture at International Exposition Panama Pacific Exposition Will Be University of Education far the Farmer. The Interest Hat humanity always has had in theso lasses, so necessary to man'B exist ence, in recent years has been turned to strong assistance. Colleges and uni versities have been giving entire de partments to their Interests and many schools are devoted to agrieultnre, ex cluding all other branches of study. Special courses, demonstration trains nd active campaigns under the lender hip of scientists are becoming common nd are giving their studied efforts tq make advance in bringing animal and vegetable to the ideal. The Panama-Pacific International Ex position will be a university at which every phase of these industries will be treated with the care and skill of the laboratory. It will not be primary education; it will not be higher educa tion; it will not be education by pro ducts. It will be education that in cludes all of these, and the visitor may choose the branch that he feels in need of most. But the biggest appeal of this educa tion will be the method of its presenta tion. It Will be a plum of marvelous flavor placed in the center of the richest offering ever set before the world. Three Departments. Three departments will present the strongest special features for the agri culturist and the stock breeder. The State exhibit promises to be laboratories where the best products are shown by the men who produced them. The national pavilions will be another source to demonstrate the suc cess of foreign scientists and workers. Now York, among other things, may show her supremacy in the production of hay, Iowa and Illinois may present interesting .exhibits of corn, and down tho line of states and territories and among tho nations special excellenco will be given a proper display. View herds, composed of animals and exhibits of poultry, which have been selected by competent authority as being typical of their several breeds will be maintained by the various breed record and poultry associations and by states and countries on tho grounds between February 20 and Sep tember 20, 1915. $227,000 for Livestock. In the past expositions livestock has been exhibited only a fow days, late in tho season. This arrangement has deprived tho great majority of visi tors of an inspection and study of the various breeds and types of domestic animals. Competitions in the depart ment of livestock will take place in October and November of 1W15. In addition to tho $175,000 which has boon set asido as cash premiums, other sums have been appropriated by asso ciations interested, which hrings tho amount to $227,000. I Milk, tho one universal food, will j be tho object of great attention in the I livestock exhibits. Its sanitary pro-. duction and care is an enormous prob lem and the solution will be aided by the exposition displays which will show creamery appliances in opera tion. Dairy demonstration will be an im portant event in the exhibits of live stock. Sanitary handling of milk and its products, the proper feeding of cows, production of certified milk, the reduction of bacterial count and the daily recording of eaeh cow in a spe cially selected herd of grade animals chosen for tho demonstrating of type value will be in charge of recognized authorities. With the increase of the "high cost of living," attention has been centered in the meat-producing animals and de mands of various kinds in many coun tries are being made to Increase the number of meat producing animals. The sheep has come in for large con sideration and in addition to the view herds of sheep, which will be main tained on the ground, there will be the cheep competitions which will bring out the greatest number of high-class cheep ever assembled in America. Large premiums have also been of-' fared in tho sheep shearing contest where men and women experts of the world will present n object lesson to those interested in the production of wool. Bheep dog trials will also be held in conjunction with the shearing contests, - Poultry Exhibit. The poultry show of the Panama Pacific International Exposition will include more breeds and types than any other show. The world-wide in terest in this department has caused the exposition to provide accommoda tions for more than 12,500 birds in ad dition to turkeys, ducks, geese, pigeons and other fowls. Specialty clubs of the world have offered money awardB, trophies, leg bands and special ribbons in addition to the cash prizes offered by the exposition. Plans are now being worked out whereby an international egg laying contest will be conducted on the grounds. The suggestion came, from Australia and the contest will last 12 months. A special Hall of Congresses is be ing erected on the livestock area of 65 acres. This building will accommo date livestock, poultry and other organ izations that will hold their meeting in San Francisco in 1915. This hall will be equipped with moving pic tures and magic lantern slides and every other facility for giving lectures and demonstrations. In the Palaee of Agriculture theTe will be models of farm buildings show ing to the general arrangement of stables, sheep folds, barns, pig sties, poultry houses, breeding grounds and special arrangements for breeding and fattening cattlo. Displays will also be made of ma terial and appliances used in tho agri cultural engineering, reclaiming of marshes; drainage and irrigation. Every detail of farming implement will have demonstrations as will the subject of fertilizers. Types of agricultural factories con nected with farming, oil mills, grain elevators and appliances, equipment for the breeding of birds and all phases of market gardening will be shown. The theory of agriculture with studies relating to soil and water from an agricultural point of view, charts and history of agriculture will be other parts of the display. Useful insects and their products, injurious insects and plant diseases will be demonstrated by comprehensive collections of animal life. Forestry and forest products will be another com plete department of unusual interest. These are a few of the special things that will interest the agricul turist and the stock raiser at live Panama-Pacific International Exposi tion. However great the interest may be in these things they can arouse only a small part of the interest that will be commanded by the other as pects of this $50,000,000 wonderland. Eight of the great exhibit palaces are now practically completed and their domes are brilliant with oriental colors. Sculpture is taking its place in the seheme of things and the Tower of Jewels which is to rise 435 feet i now rising on its steel foundation. State pavilions are being erected, na tional buildings are under way, the mile raeo track is being graded, the concessions area which is to cover 65. acres and cost more than $10,000,000, now is dotted with odd structures that are being added to each day.
