To do less is to be unworthy of a place in the line of transmission and a blot in their memory. What they bought with their lives and service has been delivered only in a small part for out of the coming years will be an ever increasing heritage to all whose feet stand upon the Oregon land and "whose hands labor for its development. hundred thousand square miles. It borders the ocean of great future ac tivity. The canal is the fingerboard pointing all Europe all the world to it. The Pacific Coast is to be no longer the backdoor of the nation. Here is to be the center of busy scenes. Here are to meet the repre sentatives of all races and therefore here will be tested the institutions and policies of our country in a way not hitherto presented in this west ern country. Let us remember that under the new conditions now ob taining this is the meeting place of the east and the west. There is to be no more pioneering. We are on the summit of the mountain of time. Today the call comes to both with peculiar force to be worthy successors of noble forbears. It is not for me today to attempt to look far into the future of our state, but I am inclined to think most of this audience will agree with me when I say that the natural advantages of Oregon are as good as the average conditions of Europe, and therefore will as readily support as dense a population. This would mean a pop ulation iu this state of nearly ten million. But hear me, kinsmen, when I say they will not all be na tive sons and daughters. America is yet an asylum for all people. Dare we think that our generous impulses are not wise? Do we ever ask or think whether we are acting under the dominency of men whose brains and hearts can be trusted as chart and compass? . . With the gateway to the Pacific unlocked, steamship companies will be advertising this coast in every Eu ropean country. New and increasing population will mean new and great er problems.,- So far as they relate to material development we will have much to gain as a state, for it is easy to see the expansion of our fields. Scarcely an acre of Oregon land has yet done its best. The tens of thou sands of acres to be cleared, drained and irrigated mean annual returns of bounteous harvests to attract and feed the hungry thousands. The orchards, the mines, the "fish eries, the live stock, the manufac tories to follow what prodigal wealth they all mean. It is these vast resources iu such happy combin ation that constitutes our greatest strength and widest opportunity. But I am not attempting today to portray our posslbi'ities of wealth but merely to point to it as the mag net that will irresistably draw to our state the millions from other states and foreign lands. The great problem soon to con front the Native Sons and Daughters is not the production of wealth but the character of citizenship and in tegrity of manhood that must be de veloped and sturdily maintained to meet the conditions that will soon surround and involve us. Thus far we have had on this coast no foreign problem of consequence, but the as sembling of the oppressed, the poor the unlearned will be a part of our unavoidable charge, producing prob lems that cannot be shaken off but must be settled and settled right, tor we will be dealing with human be ings whose rights cannot be denied. We have had no city problem to har rass, no slums In the modern sense. In the land to which our fathers brought us it lias been all sunshine, but we now are, and rapidly are be coming more a part of the great dis cordant world whose murmurings are heard through every source of communication and are as certain as the re-appearing of the morning su. These problems are to be the testors of our national institutions and of the Justice of our modern civiliza tion. Native Sons and Daughters, I re peat, there is no more west, noTotlv er shifting ground and it is well for are we not too strong to turu our backs upon what is inevitable, a burden to be borne by the brave and true. Certainly .we and .our im mediate successors are not going to live from the fruits of the genera tion before us, without exertion, without sharing responsibility, leav ing all to the children of the new comer. We shall have a Dart in the readjustment of the old and the ap plication of such newer Ideas as jus tice demands and human sympathy compels. If God is enthroned right will prevail. Public fealty is only a nobler conception of the duty a man owes to his family; a nation is a uu ion of families and patriotism the synthesis of their domestic virtues. The ruin of nations like the ruin of families come from the same cause neglect. To neglect one's family is to lose it; to neglect one's coun try is to perish with It. Native Sons and Daughters of the Saxon blood, behold the conquests of thy race! If we glance backward over the path-way made in the past century by the race that brought us here, we will see that no barriers stopped its course. Wherever man existed there it has planted its foot steps. It has crossed every sea, tra versed every desert and sought ev ery solitude. It has passed over mountains, moistened deserts and driven disease from the. swamps. It has girdled the earth with a path tragic and heroic. The blessings of its civilization are so widely flung that the sun and stars shine together upon' them and there is no night shades or morning dawns where Its blessings are not felt. But the past has given no guaranty of the perpet uity of any race or promise that its achievements will not perish. The future holds In store these secrets, but out of the past and from the living present we read the edict that without equality and exact justice there can be no abiding custom. The Western Native Sons and Daughters, mingling together as common citizens of a composite race, will apparently not long be able to trace their lineage. Their hope therefore cannot be in the purity of their blood but in their fidelity to the high purposes of mind and heart minds trained to all that tire best schools can give and hearts attuned to the infinite song of a common bro therhood. Kinsmen, we will be true. Intel ligence and integrity shall be our watchwords!
