We will treat you fair and will appreciate a share of your patronage. : : We Can Do All Kinds of Repair Work The Tax Liberator. The quickest way to reduce taxes is to reduce public expenditures. Can this be done? Is the money now used for public expenses spent In the most efficient way? Do the people of Ore gon get 1 dollar's worth of good for every' dollar they pay in taxes? is there waste in public expenditure by those whom we have elected to spend our money? Are there useless com missions and officials? To read the platforms and declarations of those who are now running for office on would think our taxes were now be- anyone now running tor omcc is a tory mob of parasites who destroy business, Invade private rights and prey upon the weak. To read these same platforms every legislature of recent years has been bent upon fur thering the opportunities of these ne farious tax eaters and oppressing the people of the state, but a vote for vote for freedom from taxes, a vote vote forf reedorn from taxes, a vote for better conditions for the wage earner, a vote for happy life on the farm, and a vote for good roads. It leads us to hope that regardless of who may be elected the next legisla ture will be composed of men who will forever free us from the oppres sion of life. How much of this is true? How much of this is political buncomb? That taxes are constantly increasing is agreed. That taxes must con tinue to Increase seems inevitable as we are demanding better living con ditions each year. We want, better schools, better roads, streets and walks, better living conditions, bet ter care for the unfortunate in the way of asylums and eleomosinary institutions, county aid to the unfor tunate widow with dependent child ren, direct election laws which will reflect the wishes of the people to a greater degree than was believed to be obtained under the old system. All these cost money. There is no wish on the part of the people to lose the progress we have made. There is no disposition by them to shirk the payment of the bills which these improvements occasion, But the people of the state wish to be satisfied that they are getting what they pay for. First they want to know that there is some real tangible good comes from every dollar they pay In taxes. We don't want any question about this. We don't want any far-fetched theories. We want to be shown. Secondly, we want to know that these good things of life are given to us at the least possible cost. We want to feel that our ser vants in office are just as careful of our money as are our wives when they buy our meat. We want to feel that there is no duplication of work. We want to feel that the business of the state Is conducted along business lines. We want less buncomb and niore common sense. We want fewer generalities and more concrete statements regarding public expenditure. If our candi dates for office wish to abolish nr consolidate commissions and offices, what commissions and offices do they suggest we abolish or consolidate. How many of our prospective members of the legislature are mak ing an honest, comprehensive and intelligent study of the question of public expenditure in order that they may vote in a manner that will inure to the benefit of the great mass of people when these questions come up for decision at the next session of the legislature. It is the purpose of the Tax Liberator to afford a means of free decussion of this question. Not only to the public servant in office or he who is now a candidate before the people for a position of public trust, but to everyone, these columns are open. These questions will be freely discussed by the editor, but his Ideas are the ideas of but one man. In a question of such vital import to every citizen In the state there should be full and free discus sion. The only request that Is made is that communications avoid gener alities. We want facts, and we want definite, concrete statements. Don't be afraid of hurting some one's feel ings. Often times the truth is not pleasant. This publication intends to speak the truth. If some of our officials have been enjoying an easy time without making proper showing in the way of direct tangible benefits to the people who are paying them if some of our public officials are false to their trust, If some of them have a graft in the way of high sal ary with little work, then the truth will hurt. If some commissions are and others are bad, it Is only fair to the people of the state that they be informed as to which are the good and which are the bad. The neces sary commissions will welcome inves tigation. The useless commissions will object to it. If the Tax Libera tor steps on somebody's toes or hurts their feelings, it won't even be sorry Its first duty is to the people of the state and that sacred duty will be ever foremost In its labors. In the next issue of the Liberator will appear a detailed account of what is being handed to the tax pay era of one county in the state. We nre going to call names. Watch the , fireworks. STATE NEWS ITEMS OF GENERAL INTEREST Portland Stockyards to be Enlarged to Handle Increasing Business. Portland, Ore., July 28, (Special) As an Indication of the tremendous growth of the livestock industry in Oregon and other sections of the Pa cific Northwest, the Portland Union Stockyards Company has found it necessary to immediately make a large addition to its pen space In or der to keep pace with constantly in creasing shipments. The necessity for increased yardage for sheep feed ing is mainly responsible for the ad ditions which will be made at this time, and it is estimated that the new pens will take care of at least 15,000 head, making a total sheep capacity of the yards of approximately 35,000 head. Parmer Smith of the O.-W. R. & N. Co., returning from an inspection trip through Eastern Oregon, states that the grain yield 'for this stats has been considerably under-estimated, and that in most cases the wheat Is turning out much better than ex pected. He states that farmers who planted acclimated corn are meeting with great success and the growth of this crop is unusually good. A big cannery and fruit packing, to be built and operated by Llbby, McNeil & Libby, the Chicago packers, is practically assured for The Dalles. At Sydney, in Polk county, the Krebs Brothers, formerly in the hop business are constructing an im mense dairy barn which will be up- to-date in every respect. It will have cement floors, brass rails, modern ventilation, running water, and will cost about $2,000. The employes will wear white suits, and at milking time the cows will be washed, milked by machinery and only the final "strippings" will be done by hand. Fifty grade Holsteins will be han dled at first and 100 head additional will be purchased in the near future Plans are practically completed by the Gresham Fruit Growers' Associa tion for the erection of a cannery at that point, nearly all of the $15,000 in capital stock having been already disposed of. It Is planned to run the cannery on a co-operative basis, a plan which has been found successful in other localities, and it is believed that its establishment will result in the cultivation of hundreds of acres In Powell Valley now idle.
