8 IIOME AND FARM MAGAZINE SECTION Automobiles and Good Roads Oregon Automobile Registrations Show Prosperous Conditions in State Over $1,250,000 Invested in 1914 Cars. M EARLY every make of automobile and commercial car is now record ed by the Secretary of the State of Oregon in the automobilo ownership list, which range in numbers from 3,688 Fords to one Xapier. On June 30th the total registration reached 14, 629, as compared with 13,954 for 1913 and 10,165 for 1912, each for tho full year. A low estimate for 1914 is 17, 500. This means that the automobile assessment rolls of the state will aggre gate $6,125,000 on March 1st, 1915, al lowing the average assessment of $350 for each car; while based upon the low average purchase price of $7Q0, we get tho enormous figure of $12,500,000. We need only examine the 1914 busi ness for au indication of prosperity. Approximately 1,800 1914 models have been registered, and at the manufac turers' listed prices aggregate about $1, 250,000. Every County Bepresented. Every county in tho state has liberal representation, from nine in Curry to 5,895 in Multnomah. The following is a complete county classification, taken from ' the Automobile Kecord. This statement includes transfers from one owner to another and of licenses from car to car, and is therefore slightly in excess of the actual number, but this is equally distributed. On the other hand, there are a large number of cars throughout the state carrying no license. By actual count of several hundred of the May and June registrations, 60 per cent of addresses fall outside of Marion and Multnomah counties, thus indicating that it is the farmer of Oregon who is now riding in his automobile. j We are indebted to Mr. M. O. Wilkins for the figures which are the basis of this article. He publishes the Auto mobile Eecordj which is issued monthly, and makes a complete automobile own ers' directory. This directory, contains a numerical index enabling you to locate any owner from the license num ber, indicates new cars, gives each, county separately and alphabetically and much other valuable data for the automobile owner and tradesman. When the residents'of St. Louis have unexpected guests and look hope fully in the family ice box to find it empty, they do not rash down to the corner delicatessen store for ham and cheese and potato salad and dill pickles. They return to the parlor and calmly wait until the delicatessen, store comes to them. For St. Louis has a traveling delicatessen store. It is a 7,000-poun 1 triick equipped with a raither unusual body. TO MAKE it possible for persons who have lost theirlegs or whose lower limbs are disabled through accident or disease, to operate an auto mobile properly, a hand-controlled drive has been designed whereby the usual operations of transmission, clutch and reverse may be accomplished by the hands instead of by the foot levers provided on most cars. The device is constructed of aluminum, aud consists of three levers and a frame attached to the steering column. From these lovers three Bteel rods pass through the dash to bell cranks under the hood. The movements of the latter are com municated beneath the floor to the transmission case. The levers are self locking in any position, and return to normal when released by a slight pres sure of the fingers. But little effort is required to move them, and one hand is always free for the steering wheel. The new device does not interfere with the pedal action, and a car so equipped may bo driven by another person in the ordinary manner without touching the hand control.
