Jens Peterson and son, Herman, of Philomath, Oregon, were in Hepp ner several days the past week. Mr. Peterson Is a prosperous farmer of that part of the Willamette valley and is interested In getting a farm in Eastern Oregon. They departed for their home on Sunday much pleased with what they saw here and expect to return at a later date to see if they cannot close up a deal for farming land in this county. Ed Neill, Butter creek stockman, was in Heppner on Tuesday. J. B. Huddleston, genial agent at the Heppner depot, went to The Dalles Wednesday on business. Newt. Mrs. George Perry and young son are visiting in Heppuer this week, Mrs. Perry coming over from the farm near Lone Rock where she Is living during the summer vacation. Emerv Gentry, young con of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Gentry, of Heppner, de parted on Tuesday morning on a visit to an uncle, W. E. Gentry, residing at Colfax, Wash. George Perry will leave for Mc Duffy Springs on Monday. He has been suffering severely for the past six weeks with rheumatism and will "ay at the springs long enough to set relief and be cured of his pain- IU1 malady. Mrs. Henry Blackman, accompan ied by her son Leo, left on Sunday last for Portland where they were joined by Mr. Blackman who came UP from San Francisco to meet them and to take in the Rose Festival with these members of his family. Ray Huddleston of Lone Rock spent a couple of days In Heppner this week, coming over after his wife who recently underwent an op eration at Heppner Sanitorium and who was able to return home with her husband yesterday. The Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Case which has been so seriously ill the past week, is now improving and the attending physician, Dr. Winnard, is encouraged to believe the child will now recover and be come a strong and robust babe. Mrs. B. G. Sigsbee went to The Dalles on Wednesday to attend the closing exercises of St. Mary's Acad emy where her sister, Miss Muriel McCarty, has been attending school the past year. The school is celer brating its golden jubilee anniver eary and holding its commencement exercises today. Music Hath Charms. "Can you make me a sheet-Iron mandolin?" Next time I smash him I want to smash good." Mrs. R. Hogeland, who was re cently operated on at the hospital of Drs. Allison and Culbertson in this city, will be taken, to Portland to morrow for further surgical treat ment, it having developeed that she is afflicted with cancer of the breast. The first operation was of a slight nature, and made for the purpose of more complete diagnosis by a lab jratory examination. Mrs. Hogelund will go, to Portland in charge of Dr. Allison and placed in the hands of a 'ancer specialist. An entrance fee of 10 per cent of the amount of purse to be ran for will be charged and all entries must be made with the committee not later than 8 o'clock the evening before the race. . 5 horses to enter and 3 to start In all events and all horses must be on hand promptly at the hour of the race or their money will be forfeited. Purses will he divided 70 per cent to the winner ind 30 per cent to second. The track is now In condition and all horses are welcome to come and do training.
