Corrlgall, president of the First National Bank, was attending to business matters in this city on Mouday. 100 people were killed, and as many injured in an earthquake which occurred in Sclcly last Friday eve ning, when Mt. Etna again became active. C. J. Anderson and R. M. Akots, prominent farmers of the Gooseberry section were Heppner business visit ors on Monday. This office acknow ledges a pleasant call. k Rev. W. N. Ferris pastor of the Federated church, 'returned from Pendleton on Saturday after having attended a three-day's convention of the Umatilla Baptist Association. Delvin and Bernard Cox of Port land, arrived in Heppner Sunday evening. They will visit for several weeks at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Cox of Rhea creek. A, party consisting or Paulmer Brunton, Lowell Twitchell, Mrs. D. E. Gilman and Miss Virginia Craw ford autoed to the W. D. Newlon ranch in the "Banana Belt" last Sun day. Fred Elder, local barber, departed on Sunday for Baker, where he will spend a week visiting with relatives and friends. Ernest Clark is filliiif; the position at the Elder & Patterson shop during Mr. Elder's absence. S. P. Devin moved his family to the country the first of the week. Ho has purchased from Minor Bros, the ranch just above the mouth of Skinner fork which will be by him converted into a modern stock and dairy farm. Clyde Wells and Celsus Keithloy recently purchased 40 r.cres of bot tom land from Oscar Minor. This land is from the lower part of the celebrated Mountain Valley Stock farm. These gentlemen expect to build homes on this tract in the near future. Eli Carpenter was in lieppner from Lone Rock over Monday night and departed on Tuesday for New port, Oregon, where he is investing in some property and where lie ex pects to move with his family in the near future. Mr. Carpenter will en gage in the photograph business at Newport. Oscar Keithley , and family, of Eight Mile, were visitors at the home of Mrs, Kelthley's parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. R. Esteb, on Saturday and Sunday. A splendid rain visit ed the Eight Mile section on Friday and the growing crops received a soaking that will add many bushels to their increase. Wm. Salzwedal, who owns the Hiatt ranch west of Heppner, says that crop conditions in his locality are excellent. He has 500 acres of wheat, mostly fall sown, and expects a heavy production. . Mr Salzwedal is a firm believer in good roads and says that ho would give $100 every year to this cause if every other far mer would do as much. L, M. Fobs, Traveling Freight and Passenger Agent of the O.-W. R. & N. Co., with headquarters at Bend on the Deschutes branch, was a Heppner visitor on Monday. Mr. Foss was on his first visit here and he was well pleased with Heppner and the surrounding country, our city presenting quite a contrast to the boom towns of the Central Oregon section.
