GEO. J. CURRIN Mr. Editor of The Gazette-Times: Permit me to correct an error ap pearing in your issue of two weeks ago. In a clipping from the Browns ville Times, was said among other things that the socialists had started a move to repeal the initiative and referendum. Will someone be so kind as to show in what way there can be any truth in this statement? The article says the trend is to make a one man's government. The fourth plank in the national social ist platform declares for the Initia tive and referendum. Don't get scared about the socialists trying to tear down that valuable measure; the one through which their untir ing agitation is greatly responsible for Oregon to be able to boast of the eradication of the old time "one man's government." While many republicans and dem ocrats are loud in their denunciation of the initiative and referendum, it is Impossible to find a socialist who is hostile toward it. While the in itiative and referendum is abused to some extent, we cannot think of el iminating it. The increasing length of the ballot seems to be the only objectional feature, and the social ists have a remedy for that. The DroDortional representation measure which you will get a chance to vote on this fall, and which also the so cialists declare for in their national platform, is the only means by which the ballot may be shortened. Through the workings of this law because of the fact that all parties will be represented in the legislature according to the strength of their nartv. manv measures which other wise would be initiated and referred to the people, will be fought out in the legislature. It is possible now for a party representing one third of the voting strength of the state to elect all of its representatives, be cause the other two thirds are dlvid ed between four or five other parties Conseauently laws are often fram ed in the legislature that conflict with the sentiments of the majority of the people and a measure is init iated to kill it; whereas if the legis lature had been thoroughly repre sentative: or in other worus n every nartv had been reoresentedd accord iner to its strencth. the sentiment of the legislature could be more accur ately relied upon as being the dom inant sentiment of all the voters, and many measures which would other wise be referred to the people, would be killed In its embryo state. This DroDortional representation measure allows any voter to vote for any leg islative candidate in the state ana the Bixty receiving the highest num ber of votes are thereby elected. It will give the weaker parties a chance to concentrate their strength on few er candidates, thereby insuring their election. Those who believe in a "sauare deal" should support this measure. A. S. Salem, Oregon, April 15, 1914. To the Republican Voters of Oregon: Ladles and Gentlemen: I wish to state that I am a candidate for the Republican nomination to the office of Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of Oregon. I began the practice of law at Pendleton, Oregon, in 1881. Having served as District Attorney two terms, and as Circuit Judge in the Sixth Judicial District, comprised of Umatilla and Morrow Counties, and having been elected in 1910 to the position I now hold as a member of the Supreme Court, I feel that my record is an "open book." I appreciate the favors shown me by the people of this state and hope that I have in no way fail ed in the exception of the trust com mitted to my care, and that I may have the continued confidence of the electors of the state, and especially of those of my home district I re spectfully ask your support for the nomination for a second term at the Republican Primary Election, May 15, 1914. I have been a Republican all my life and believe that, if nominated, I shall be re-elected, I should be glad to do the work. I firmly believe In the Direct Primary law, and in the right or tne people to inact their own laws, in the interest of the morals, education and welfare of the citizens of the state, and for the uplift of humanity, ami that when such laws are adopted they should be strictly enforced. This constitutional privilege of the electors of Oregon should be sacredly gaurd- ed by the Courts. I am Very respectfully, Yours for Good Government, Paid Adv. HENRY J. BEAN. Henry J.
