Respectfully, Athena, Or. C. A. BARRETT. ERY, THE BED ROCK OF THE DAIRY BUSINESS. By Mrs. Annie I. Hughes. In Western Stock Journal. In summing up the advantages of the co-operative creamery and why farmers should stand by these or ganizations instead of patronizing the large centralizers or creameries owned by private individuals, tho following are taken into consider ation. First. It insures every cent of profit to the farmers. Second. It encourages better quality iu the output. Third. 1 1 encourages better methods on the farm. Fourth. It encourages the build ing up of the home industries. Fifth. It teaches the farmer that they are business men. Sixth. It makes a better locality in which to live. It has been said that a smooth tongued stranger with authority to offer one-fourth cent more than the market quotation can put any co-operative creamery out of business. When the machinery of the cream ery is lying rusting in the scrap heap and the centrali.or or creamery own ed by private individuals lias full swing, then the farmer will awaken and see the folly of his ways. When there is no competition from the co-operative organizations then prices will bo regulated to the Ueast figure that the . farmers will 'stand and stay in tho business. It is not to be wondered at that the big business concerns consider the far mers good plucking, for they have guessed right. Dairymen must protect themselves by organization as well as other branches of business. Many con sider the price of making but do not think of the over run being added to the butter fat which is from one sixth to one-fifth more added to the butter fat for butter. Therefore, the producer will receive all the re turns for his cream except the actual cost of making and getting tho but ter on the market. It has been said that the co-oper-ativo ts the citadel of dairing. If all of the co-operatives should cease business, then the centralizers would put their heads together and fix but ter fat prices each month. Their motto is "Divide and Conquer.". If you can divide the fanners then you can handle them to your heart's con tent. They use the farmer for a weapon against himself. If you own stock in a co-operative creamery value it and think that your co-operative organization helps to keep you on an even footing with the other fellow. JURY I OR MAY TERM.
