Cowan, ex-postmaster at Cowan, Montana was recently con victed and sentenced to the federal crison at Leavenworth, on a charge of issuing fradulent monev orders to the amount of 14300. For the past two months a party of deputy game wardens has been busy locating the boundaries of the new game refuge, 86 miles square, lying in Lake and Crook counties, in the central part of tbe state. The pri mary object in establishing this refuge is the protection of the mule deer and antelope which are still found in con siderable numbers in that vicinity. The refnee is also a sort of natural Dark, containing many hot springs, lava beds, medical lakes and other objects of interest to the tourist and naturalist. The Hay Creek ranoh in Crook county, Oro. comprising 25,000 acres, has been s 11 by the Baldwin Sheep and Land Company for a consideration approximating f 500 ,000 to Judge John L. Twohy. Emery Olmstead and L. B. Menefee, directors of tbe Northwest ern National Bank of Portland, and James B. Kerr, of the legal firm of Carey and Kerr. The ranoh will con tinue to be operated under the com pany name. There are now more than 20.000 sheep on the ranch, valued at $100,000. This number will be in creased and cattle and hugs also will be raised. The ranch will continue to be operated solely as a stock ranch, with no mire cultivation than is necessary. Rural Spirit. A statement just Issued by tlie Stnte Superintend pnt of banks calls attention to the fact that the present cash reserve is 34.8 per cent, nearly 10 per cent more than required by law. Deposits in the 1170 urate banks and 86 national banks have increased $7,084,558 during the past year while total resources have Increased $9,696,338. Tbe 256 banks in the state xhow total deposits of 1132,762. 157. with total resources of $169,462,833. Statistics gathered at tha poultry show held in Portland last week show that poultry and ponltry products annually add more wealth to the state than does fruit, three times as rcuch as wool, one and a half times as much as hops, nearly half as much as wheat and reoresents about 6 per cent of the total acrioulturil wealth of the state.
