Hylauo, a former resident of Heppner. He is now situated at Lowell, Oregon and ie enjoying a good trade in the general merchandise business in that oity. A letter from him of Septem ber as6 reads in part as follows: Mr. Vawter Crawford, Heppner Oregon. Editor Heppner Gazette. Esteemed Sir: We enjoy the weekly arrival of the news from Morrow county, and notice the goings and re turning, with tne comers wno go again, and it pleases us to fancy that the acquaintances whom we once looked opon as friends in their every day life, mav have forgotten that there did live such a humble person in their midst. But memories still are cherished of the two years spent iu your oity, which perhaps would have been our residence had circum stances permitted or opportunity had spoken legs distinctly. We have no objection to you pub lishing, if you choose, this greeting, which includes some of all the many classes which make Morrow county what it is. We ccurted the friend ship of some good moral people, en joved the manly principles of rough element, the square deal to all clnsses, and above all the sincere brotherly affection as expressed by sturdy Swedes of the northern portion of the county. Ever since living in that section, and knowing only a portion of the good folks, we think a man complimented when accused of being that Nationali ty. To these very people is Morrow largely dependent. We notice the passing of those who a short time ago were the controlling power, politically and otherwise; the success of others justly deserving, and can from this distance see the workings upwar or the reverse of thoss unfortunates who were in a cIsbs with the writer. T.e characteristics of each impressed on memory is a pleasing combination of which to think. The short qoic.k steps of some, the slower more careful walk of some other business men, the greetings as bandied on the street, the wedding welcome given Ward, also Bisbee, Jive as vesterday Enough to show you the past is ever at hand when a person receives the weekly news of his past home. The man who advertises in the little home paper is prone to think he is talking to the people of his home town only, or that it does not make much difference what ho puts in his ad vertisement they wi II only boy so much anyway, and where they chouse to at that. You as nn editor realize the extent of your circulation The many maglzineg, credit men Associa tions, patent medicine houses and I have even heard of mail order houses subscribing or exchanging merchandise for country subscription and you know how gladly they would pay for space if you sought their patronage. In fact the Gazette-Times tells me each week who is makine gond, the advretisement speaks the feeling of the writer and the people know ir Space don't pay returns, words count for much, but as I hare noticed the advertisements in the paper, I will wager on who gets the per cent not the most of the business which counts One fault with us country or inland meichants is that we adver tise when business is good anl when it if poor and we need it, we can't afford the epxense; foolish and expen sive sayitg. Another thing Friend Crawford, is that some of your ad vertisers are using patent or stock ads Maybe you sell those merchants ready made advertisements with plate etc. Now sneaking from this distance where I feel free from physical cr immediate harm, would sugeest that the customer, native or otherwise. who takes the time to read an adver tisement, wants to know what the man whose name is uigued to the ad has to sny, they don't cars what some "Gink" in Chicago has figured out to get them to the store that buys patent ads. Evening Telegram. Tom Lawson doesn't care for ex penses; he has plenty of 'era. The mare was brought out here originally from the Laws m stable of thoroughbreds at "Dreamwold, " the Lawson estate just outside of Bean town, so that the round trip for the exquisite little pure blooded animal cost the millionaire a neat little snm of $074. Ihe mare is the property of Miss Lawson, the magnate's daughter and she had it brought out here for her own personal use and for the pleasure of her chum, Miss Jeun Morrison, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. A. A. Morri son, of this city. This express bill is bv far the largest ehaige of that kicd ever paid for a single animal in the history of Oregon and is nearly seven times the ccst of a first-class passenger ticket from Portland to the "Hnb, " the fare to Boston being $77. 15. The Lawson party, which has been in Portland and Oregon for several weeks, broke up this morning when Mrs. Henry McCall and Miss Lawson, the magnate's daughters started for Boston at 10 o'clock. Mr. Law son and his son-in-law, Henry McCall took the same train but dropped off at Deschutes Junction and went in to Prineville where McCall owns a large ranch. It is understood that Mr Lawson will remain in the iuttrior for a short time before returning to New England. He is working on a new hobbv of his, intensified agricul tural develcpment, which he has promised to "snring" on Oregon in the near future. A Perfect Baby Out of 7000 Examined. Baby Jane Kanzler, the one thous and point dauchter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kanzler of 1:135 East thirty first streit. Portland, was the winner of the state eugenics contest Out of seven thousand babies that entered into the eugenics contest at the Oregon State Fair at Salem last week, little 42 months old Jane Kanz ler was judged perfect bv the experts. She is the winner rf Ihe $100 prize offered bv the Woman's Home Com panion, the 50 cud for ihe highest score tue three year old class, the $25 cun for first prize honors in girl baby class and the grand sweepstakes prize a $20 gold medal for scoring the high est of any baby in the show. Aside from being a perfect child, baly Jane is said to be very beautiful. The county commissioners of Walla Walla county Wash., have awarded the contract for the finishing the firit five miles of the Inland Kmuire high way, between Walla Walla and Waitsbnrg, to the Atlas Construction Cumpanv of North Yakima.
