WEEK'S NEWS. Local and Personal Happenings. Harvest Time In Eastern Oregon but Railroad Time at Haylora. Louia Pearson was an outgoing passenger for Portland Monday. Dr. II. Winnard has disposed of the Slalter ranch, the deal having been closed this week. Frank Bolin, of Perlland is the purchaser. A new daughter has come to crace the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ja3. Thom son, of Heppner. Slie was horn on Monday, the 4th, and weighs ten pounds. A new girl arrived at the homo of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Elder on Sunday , Aug. 3rd. Tho littlo lady weighed ten pouuds and Dr. McMurdo reports all doing well. Dr. F. E. Bnvden, of Pendleton, accompanied bv his two sons and his mother, spent Saturday and Sunday in Heppner, coming over by anto 'They returned home Sunday afternoon. Rev. L. E. Tuber, of Lexing on, will preach at the Ilodsdon schoolhouse Sunday, Autr. 10, at II a. m. The people of that neighborhood are cor dially invited to attend the services, Chaa. Thomson and family returned Sunday evenina from Toll Rnck where they spent a counle of weeks at the home of Mr aud Mrs Stacy Rnbeits and gathered in a supply of hucke berries. The citizens of Hardman announce in another column the date fortheir races this Fall. Ihev will have out their postern shortly and full partic ulars will be announced in them. A considerable storm vieited the mountain section Monday evening in the vicinty of Herrin's mill aud about 4 inches of hail fell. No damage is reported, however, and at Heppner here was not enough of the wind to cool off the atmosphere to any consid erable fxtmt tho a mighty lot of dust was in ti.e air for a time. Miss Virginia Crawford left f.r Portland Monday and will spend the balance of the month visiting with friends there and at Newberg. She had in her oharge Masters Herman Hill and Eddie Ohidsey who go on a visit of a couple of weeks with Her man's grandmother. Mrs. John Mc Ferrin, at Montavilla. Dr. J. E Crutclified, president of Columbia College of Milton, was in Heppuer over Sunday and preached at the M. E. church, South. He left for Lexington where he spent Monday, i nl from there he went to Portland to spend a few days before returning to his home at Milton. Dr. Crntchfleld is a very pleasant gentleman and the editor of thla paper was happy 40 make his acquaintance. Thos. Brennan sot home from Port land Sunday evening and is busy again at bis shop. He has spent a month in Good Samaritan hospital recovering from a "making over" process which he underwent at the hands of a Port land burgeon His ailment was one of long standing and his recovery was a little slow but he feels line now and will soon be in shape to shoe all the horses in the county. W. V. Smead returned yesterday morning from a visit into the Hard man country where he went the first of tho went too gather ud some sam ples of Brain for the coming Morrow County Fair. lie was accnmpalned by Frank Turner who continues ths work. Mr. Smead save crops ate cer tainly fine in the Hardman section and the people up that way will har vest a lot of splendid grain. Interest is picking up in tha fair, and the secretary says the country people are going to come through with a lot of good exhibits. Wheat in Wallowa county is going 35 bushels to the acre. Seventy bushels of wheat to the acre is reported from a foitv acre field in Walla Walla county, Wash. Harvest is now in. full blast in Sherman county. Weather conditions are considered favorable at present though still quite warm in the north ern part of the county near the Colum bia river. The average expectation of fall sown grain is in the neighbor hood of ten tu twelve sacks to the acre. The spring sown grain will couie con siderably under that estimate, says the "Moro Observor. " A society has been nragnizad by Polk county farmers at McCoy, to be known as the Farmers Society cf Euity. Its object is the systematic marketing of farm products. It al ready has a large membership and bids fair to become very popular. The strawberry season has come to a close in Hood River valley and the records hnw that 109 car loads were shipped from there this season, the largest number of cats ever shipped from there in one year.
