Well, then, just listen to this proposition : Before you order a "mail order" separator write to the concern and tell them that you want to try their machine out against a De Laval, with the priv ilege of sending their machine back if you decide that the De Laval is better worth what we ask you for it than their machine is worth what they ask. That's absolutely fair, isn't it? We'll be glad to furnish you a De Laval for such a trial any time you like and let you be the judge. We are glad to make this offer because we know that the De Laval will give you better service and cost you less in the long run than any other machine you can buy, no matter what the price. Brings Results While the contest for election of school director was pretty lively Monday, there was not the -interest manifested on the part of every taxpayer of the district that there should have been; in fact it is surprising to note how many had forgotten all about.the annual meeting. It should not be necessary to call attention to this fact but it seems to be nec essary to do so. Out of a possi ble three hundred voters in the district, but 53 voted. Our school is too important to be treated in this manner, besides there is no small number of these same three hundred taxpayers that are quite willing to express their opinion as to how the school is being con ducted and the money of the dis trict spent. There should be greater interest manifested at the annual meeting and also at the special meeting in the fall when the tax lew is made. Get out and hear the reports and offer vour suggestions, not with the idea of merely finding fault with what your neighbors are trying to do, but to be of real help in making conditions with the school better. There has been some unjust criticism offered against the present school board ; in fact some people have said, unguardedly we think, that the men compris ingourpresent boardof education are the poorest for the position of any that ever have tried to conduct the affairs of the school. We are not making comparisons, but will say that we believe this a very unjust criticism, and one that is entirely uncalled for. Our present board have been very efficient in the work they have had to do; they really need no defence whatever for they have had a lot of very important work to carry out, and this will bear the closest investigation. They may have made mistakes, all hu man beings are liable to do this; but these have been mistakes of judgment only, and for our part we feel that much credit is due them. Line up with the board for the coming year and help to put the Heppner School to the front where it belongs. Do not withhold in the least any just criticisms and complaints, but let them be based on the high plane of making things better, and not mere fault finding. ner to a very large extent, re gardless of the fact that they had very poor roads to get over. Our people are interested at the pres ent time in getting a road into the Ritter country, something that should have been accomplish p.4 twenty years ago, and before renmeton opened up the way to the best part of that trade for their town. There is doubtless much trade that can be turned this way from that section by a good road; many of these people wish to come here and ship their stock and trade at this point, but we already have the trade of Monument and Long Creek, as well as other portions of Northern Grant, and we need to put some of the road between here and there in good shape. People coming over from Monument , in form us that the road on the other side of the county line is excellent, hat when they reach the head of Wall creek on this sid there is about three miles of almost im passible road. This can easily be put in shape by a few days of work and the building of abridge across Wall creek. While talk ing a new road from Ritter, why not see to it that this road from Monument is put in first class shape to hold a trade we already have. There will have to be some stirring on the part of Heppner business interests, else the trade now coming' here will will be taken away by other sec tions that manifest a keener bus iness spirit. This is the title of a beautiful Story that has been running in The Woman's World. Sometime since the first of a series of illus trations from this story was thrown on the canvas at the Star Theater, and the public of Hepp ner have been anxiously awaiting the succeeding pictures in order to get the entire story. "Alone In New York" is the next of the series, and this will be a part of the program for next Wednesday and Thursday nights, and install ments are to follow regularly j about every two weeks until the completion of the fascinating! story.
