"A mother who trains her
daughter for a 'society bud'
will regret it in after years,
and most surely the young lady
herself will regret it in her
maturer years; but the mother
who trains and teaches her daugh
ter to become a good mother and
housewife will later be loved, re
spected and venerated by that
daughter, as the latter herself
reaps the benefit of the training
and teaching in after years, "says
an editorial in a recent number of
the Myrtle Point Enterprise.
'"The mothers of the country
should think about these things
much more than they do, and
thus do better work as true home
builders for future generations,
In her home one woman can do
far more for the uplift of hu
manity than did a thousand suff
ragettes in London who, in
smashing windows made only
material for sensational stories
for the yellow journals of the
world, or than could a thousand
Carrie Nations with a thousand
hatchets and a thousand votes."
The Oregon Agricultural Col
lege does not pretend to educate
young women for careers- as
Carrie Natipn and suffragettes,
but it does graduate each year
large classes of young women
prepared to administer efficiently
a wholesome, happy home, and
in a most economical way. The
department of domestic science
and art opens its class work
Tuesday morning, Sept. 24. The
domestic science work includes
courses in simple food preparation,
more advanced cookery, invalid
diet and refreshments, launder
ing, the serving of meals, camp
cookery, food for children, house
sanitation, household administra
tion, home nursing, marketing,
the study of home problems, a
course on the evolution of the
house which gives something of
the history of home-making, and
special training in the theory and
practice of teaching domestic
science for those who wish to take
instructional positions after leav
In the domestic art department
the sewing classes learn some
thing of spinning and weaving
and, the fundamentals of the art
and then learn to make under
wear, to darn and mend, to make
simple dresses and then learn to
more elaborate costumes, to em
broider and crochet garments and
household articles, to care for
their clothing, to draft patterns,
to do tailoring and designing, to
make their own hats and trim
them; they learn basketry and rug
weaving, stenciling and ditterent
kinds of handwork; they study
house construction and decoration
and are given, it they desire,
special training for teaching these
Thus the girl who has completed
the four year course in household
economics is well prepared to es
tablish and carry on a home of her
own, or to teach other girls, in
the schools and colleges of the
state, the requisites or a proper
education for home making.
many Driven Fron Home.
Every year, in many parts of the
countrv, thousands are driven from
their homes by coughs and lung dis
eases. Friends and business aie left
behind for other climates, but this is
costly and not always sure. A better
way the way of multitudes is to
use Dr. King's New Discovery and
cure yourself at home. Throat and
lung troubles find quick relief and
health returns. Its help in coughs,
oolds ario, croup, whooping-cough
and sore lungs make it a positive
blessing. 50o and $1 00. Trial bottle

Howard McDuffy, the eight
year old son of Mrs. McDuffy of
Hardman, was badly burned
Tuesday of last week by the flash
of powder. The boys were play
ing in the old Carol house and
found a can containing some
powder and pouring it out upon
the ground applied a match to it,
thinking it to be tobacco. The
boy's thirt sleeve and front part
of the shirt was completely
burned. Roy, the six-vear-old
boy, retained presence of mind
enough to put out the fire before
going to the house.

letter from a prospective guest, who
wrote to engage "two large, sunny

the following curt reply: "Dear Mad
