the Kansas City Star. It holds its own

give it a distinctly new aspect euch

This year a certain variation In de
tails is noted, with much attention paid
to those suggested by the modes of
China. This, perhaps, is more in the
Introduction of color and in touches
d embroidery or the application of
narrow bands of bright trimming
around the neclt and down the side,
Just as one sees in the Chinese coats.
It is probably by the clever use of
color that navy blue frocks of this
season are distinguished from those of
lust.
In line they are straight and slim,
with wrist-length sleeves which are
eometlmes tight, but quite as often
t)ell-shaped, with dainty undersleeves
of net or muslin.
For practical purposes nothing takes
the place of a dark blue gown, and
with the addition of a well chosen hat,
shoes and stockings of correct lines
and colors, and a scarf of really good
fur, it constitutes a street costume
that leaves nothing to be desired In
the way of chic and good taste.
Afternoon and dinner gowns of lace
and velvet are shown with cape or
full-length Jenny sleeves. A striking
gown of black velvet has cherry red
and gold sleeves.
There is such a youthful (harm
about the cape frocks and suits that It
Is not surprising to find them con
spicuously featured in every collection
of autumn and winter models, particu
larly among those designed for the
achool and college girl. One shop
known from coast to const for its
youthful clothes which inert every de
mand of smartness and practicability
makes a special point of the capette

It is developed In soft woolens nnd
consists of a frock with a silk top, a
wrap-around skirt of woo! and a hl
length coat which has a cape extend

fur cuffs, but the model which has
been received most enthusiastically
has simply the touch of fur at the
sock.
There nre also charming little frocks
of wool, velvet or velveteen. Thews
have a short, straight or circular cape
which snaps onto the shoulders and
inny be removed when necessary.
In one instance it is fashioned of
very dark green wool. The cape U of
circular cut and has a collar of gray
caracul. On the frock there is a little
straight Chinese collar of sliver em
broidery and this touch of silver is re
peated in the flaring cuffs.
Warmth and Wool.
Pulled-wool comforters have taken
the place, to a great extent, of those
made of down. These quilts are very
warm and are also very light In
weight. They may be bought for
varying prices according to the pro
portion of wool used nnd also the
character of the cover. Hut it Is not
necessary to buy these comforters
ready-made. The wool may be bought
iu bats as Is cotton. The work of
making them up Is not at all dtltlcult
and takes very Utile time. Tufting
them Is quite as practical as quilling
mill much simpler. One may. then,
wx'uro a very Inexpensive and durable
lei-cover.
Hat of Gray Felt
A small close-fitting hat of gray felt
has two small flowers made of feath
ers poised uion the right brim. These
tiiuminl ornaments are of gray and
coral color.

a bag of cookies from Manhattan girl
scouts, became the honorary president
of the girl scout organization.
Changing Color With Heat.
Members of the Physical society In
London were interested at a recent
meeting by an exhibition of specimens
of paint which change their color with
variations of the temperature. One
of these paints is red at ordinary tem
peratures, but turns black In a few
seconds when wanned in front of a
stove, or otherwise heated to 206 de
grees Fahrenheit. Another paint Is
yellow until heated to a temperature
af 113 degrees Fahrenheit, when it
becomes dark red. They are called
'heat-Indicating paints," but are little
aiorc than scientific curiosities.

Office Building.
Poor woman ! She gained the right
to vote, to smoke, to go to boxing
matches, to participate in athletics, to
enter business in fact, she's on a par
with man In every held of activity,
says the New York Sun and Globe.
And not on an equal footing with
man, but surpassing him in many
things, she insists.
I!ut, alas! In one Instance at least
she is doomed to defeat. The scene
Is a downtown office, where smoking
is prohibited. Yes siree, not even
the manager can use his favorite
weed while silting at his desk, but
must join the oltlce boy and lowly
salesman out in the corridor when he
desires to smoke.
Not so or milady, who has Just as
much work and responsibility as at
least half of the olllce force. She
likes a "drag" occasionally, too, but
where can she have It? The rule
denies her the privilege of deriving
inspiration from the weed while she
types, and only the men occupy the
hallway and In the lounging room the
matron absolutely refuses the girls the
right to smoke. Poor girl, what good
do women's rights do her?
