Mr. Luper was ac companied by his sister, Mrs. King, of Portland, and his aunt, Mrs. Har riett Spidell, of Los Angeles, and his young son, James Luper jr. The party returned to Portland Saturday afternoon. L. C. Martin, who completed a fojr-ycar course' at the X&rv ersity of Oregon last month, is here'to put iu the summer in the harvest fields of Morrow county. Mr. Martin lias mada liis way through college by his own efforts and is no stranger to harvest work. He expects to return to Eu gene this fall and ' continue his studies another year in order to se cure the M. A. degree. A fire alarm was turned In about 1:00 A. M. Ralph Finley, who is selllne the Calkins seed wheat smut treating machines in this county, was in town Friday and reports business pretty good but money very scarce among the farmers who want machines for this year's seeding. Mr. Finley farms in the Alpine country and says his crop this year is only a fair aver age crop. Around 18 to 20 bushels per acre. OBITUARY Mrs. Mabel Owen Murry, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Owen, was born in Benton county, Oregon, Nov. 3, 1898, died at Bend, Oregon, July 11, 1923, age 24 years, 8 months and 8 days. Mrs. Murry was formerly married to Ed Winters. To this uuion were born two children. About 6 years ago she was married to Mr. Murry. She is survived by her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Owen, Heppner; two sons LeVern and Lowell; also four sisters, Mrs. Bessie Cowdrey, Salem, Ore.; Mrs. Jessie Furlong, Hardman, Ore.; Retha Owen, Salem, Ore.; Velton Owen, Heppner.
