Reports or mammoth cucumbers grown in. Salem and Portland recen tly appearing in the Oregonian indi cate that the Willamette valley is not much of a cucumber country com pared with Morrow county. Mrs. A. M. Phelps has on exhibition at the Phelps Grocery Co. store a specimen from her garden measuring 14 inches in length and weighing one pound, nine ounces. Portland and Salem gard ners should put their cucumbers on a stronger diet and make another try for the blue ribbon. Dennise, well known local contractor, has been awarded the con tract for building the new Christian church to replace the edifice recently destroyed by fire. Excavation for the new edifice has been completed for several weeks' and it is expected the building will be enclosed before winter weather sets in. Mr. Dennise's contract covers the entire building with the exception of the plumbing, wiring and heating plant which will be awarded to local contractors it is expected.
